Best series in a long time, need the next book now!!

I was offered this book in exchange for an honest review. Although the app I needed wasn't working for some reason so I ended up paying 99cents.

First of all I need to say I could not wait for this book to be done. I needed to know what happened with the characters and how their lives went on and were changed after the death of Seth. But as soon as I started reading I have to say the first third of the book did not hold my interest. I actually started skimming thru it. I prefer books that have more dialogue but this was not just no dialogue. It was needless information I thought and nothing was happening. But nevertheless I kept on because I knew it had to get better after reading the other books. And it did not disappoint!!

Halfway thru the book it got interesting. With Sasha being who she is caused all kinds of problems. And Krissa had shut herself out after killing Seth. I felt so sorry for her. And I was kept wondering if she was going to lose Owen for good. I found myself getting so mad at Krissa for not just telling Owen everything, after all he knows everything else. But I feel like things there will work out but I'm team fox and have been from the beginning. So I can't help but wish fox would win. Lol yea I know.

Anyway, the book was written very well. And after the first part of it, I couldn't put it down. I read it in one day. I had to know what was going to happen next. And before I was ready it was over. And what a cliffhanger!! I'm so mad right now!! Krissa is the best friend ever. Taking the dark influence like that. Will her friends be able to help her?? Idk...I need the next book now!!!

I want to finish by saying THANK YOU Madeline Freeman. You wrote one of the best series I've read in a long time. The first I've read of your books and I'm hooked. You are a great writer and storyteller. Now hurry up with the next book!! :)

Part 4 to a gripping series

I was given this book by Madeline Freeman to read as part of her ARC in return for an honest review, which I am happy to give.

Once again Madeline has written each chapter dedicated to the viewpoint of individual characters which gives the reader a unique insight into that character's own thoughts and feelings. I really like this writing style as it pulls you in and makes you feel like you're part of the story.

I love that Madeline draws you into the way that each character sees themselves and thinks - at times it makes you want to hug them and at others to scream at them to wake up and see themselves the way others do. Sasha is the new "love to hate" character in the book and you just want to be able to tell the other characters to watch their backs as she's out for revenge but they just can't see it!

All in all yet another excellent instalment of the Clearwater Witches series and I can't wait for book 5 - get those keys tapping Madeline :-)

CIXIN LIU is the most prolific and popular science fiction writer in the People's Republic of China. Liu is an eight-time winner of the Galaxy Award (the Chinese Hugo) and a winner of the Nebula Award. Prior to becoming a writer, he worked as an engineer in a power plant in Yangquan, Shanxi.

Opening salvo top notch Science Fiction series

First, this does not read like a translation. Ken Liu's translation of Cixin Liu's original Chinese language novel, "San ti" (2008) comes across seamlessly in the spare, translated English prose (though I cannot speak as to the authenticity of the translation, rather, just the style). Ken Liu sprinkles footnotes throughout the novel giving some useful background with regards to the Chinese Cultural Revolution of the 1960's and 1970's, as well as background in math and physics.

The plot's political and scientific setting reminded me quite a bit of the writing of Gregory Benford, specifically, his novel Timescape. If I were to hazard a guess, if you like Benford's writing, you'll enjoy this novel. If you dislike Benford (he isn't everyone's cup of tea) you might want to pass on this. This is very much hard core, traditional science fiction. The backdrop of China's Cultural Revolution gives a memorable setting. Cixin Liu's personal experiences as a Chinese citizen (a young child - he was born in 1963) lends a degree of authenticity to that aspect of the novel.

Please, please, please read at least to the halfway point. Mr. Liu's plot slowly and steadily increases the pace. I loved the entire book, but one fellow reader was going "meh" until she read enough to tell me SHE wants to read the entire series now. If you find yourself thinking, "What's the big deal" just keep on going. This is a FUN read!

Note that this is the first of an original trilogy by the author, and I'm hooked. Try to avoid reviews that give too much of the plot away and just enjoy the work. Having never read this author before, I can see why he is one of the best selling science fiction writers in China. With this series I think he's about to widen his audience.

UPDATE: I read this book again and it has led me to preorder the next in the trilogy, The Dark Forest, which doesn't even come out in English until some time in 2015.

Science Fiction that Relies Heavily on Physics

Ye Wenjie, a young astrophysicist, suffered during the Chinese Cultural Revolution seeing her physicist father killed by an out of control group of young students. For awhile she buries herself in the forests as part of the Construction Corps, sawing down irreplaceable old trees. This experience like the Cultural Revolution convinces Ye Wenjie that humanity is not redeemable.

Her father's past as a famous physicist follows her into the Construction Corps. Before she is convicted, she's whisked away to a remote antenna station to serve as a technician. She intends to spend the rest of her life there, but events push her into the forefront of a new revolution, one to discredit science.

The book moves back and forth between Ye Wenjie's experiences and Wang Maio's. Wang is an applied physicist working on nanomaterial. He is drawn into the investigation of why so many famous scientists are committing suicide. At first he doesn't see how he fits the mold, but as the investigation progresses he gets caught up in the three body problem.

This is one of the best science fiction books I have ever read. The background relies heavily on physics which makes it fascinating. The author does an excellent job of weaving real concepts into his story. If you enjoy physics, this is a must read.

Wang and Ye are good characters. Wang grows as he faces the looming catastrophe. Ye is an enclosed woman who hides deep secrets. However, my favorite character was Da Shi. Unlike the scientists, he is a pragmatic observer who doesn't worry about theory. He looks at life. His common sense is one of the most refreshing parts of the book.

I highly recommend this book. It's the first book in a trilogy. The other two books are not available yet. If you like reading really good science fiction, you'll love this book.

Excellent foundation but flat characters, flimsy science, and sloppy writing (some spoilers)

The main idea of the book is compelling, and for that alone it gets 3 stars, but I have three issues with it: (1) the science is explained clumsily and unconvincingly, (2) the characters are poorly developed and (3) the writing is strongly affected by the Chinese-to-English translation.

The primary concept is fantastic. There is an alien civilization (the Trisolarans) that exists on a planet in the Alpha Centauri system. The Alpha Centauri system is a three-body system, resulting in chaotic weather patterns, hindering the advancement (and enjoyment) of the Trisolarans. Their entire existence is about surviving these rapid shifts and their evolution seems to have prepared them to effectively 'hibernate' in periods of extreme heat or extreme cold. The Trisolarans and Earth make contact But the Trisolarans make contact with a disgruntled Chinese physicist who has been put through hell through the cultural revolution and distrusts humanity as a whole. When the Trisolarans learn of the stability of Earth, they decide to take over the Earth. The Trisolarans recognize that they will not be able to arrive to Earth for 400-some years and are worried that humanity will have developed substantially by the time they arrive. To curb this, the Trisolarans try to leverage the disillusioned people on Earth (by using tactics similar to religions and cults) in order to halt the progress of science on Earth such that the Trisolarans will have a weaker opponent when they arrive.

This central concept is fascinating. You have an alien society with a clear purpose and objective. The three-body nature of their world provides a fascinating explanation of their harsh perspective and survivalist nature. The idea that contact would be made by someone who distrusts Earth is also fascinating. And finally, the idea of an alien civilization using our religious proclivities in order to try to halt science to make an invasion more likely is compelling (and, scarily, feels like it would work to some extent).

Unfortunately, once you branch out from the primary concept, the implementation is poor. For example, the method through which the Trisolarans infiltrate the Earth is a cop-out. The trisolarans have some magic device that is the size of a single proton (called a Sophon) that can (1) move at the speed of light, (2) make intelligent decisions at the same speed, and (3) influence the world at those speeds. This 'sophon' can also transmit information simultaneously back to the Trisolarans through "entanglement". I'm willing to accept the simultaneous transmission concept as an important sci-fi trope (although it has been disproven), but I earnestly think the story could have been more interesting if the Trisolarans had to think carefully about the four-year delayed messages and to rely more heavily on their human infiltrators to perform their deeds. In addition, I simply cannot accept the magic, intelligent, light-fast particle idea. It feels like a gimmick. Early on in the book, there are a number of mysterious events that occur, and the reader is left thinking 'what could possibly explain these crazy phenomena'. In the end, there is no explanation but a cheap, effectively omniscient and omnipresent particle. It's effectively like saying the Trisolarans are god (minus the omnipotence). It felt like the author decided he wanted certain things to occur (a countdown showing up in photos! the universe 'pulsing'!) and then had to come up with something that could create those occurrences, resulting in a hand-waving solution. This is but one gripe, but there are a number of similar issues that arise during the book that other reviewers have explained.

Finally, the character development is non-existent. I think the author may have made a conscious choice to focus more on the effect on humanity as a whole instead of the effects on individuals, but I really wish I got to know these characters better. What does Wang (one of the primary characters) think about his family and wife in the context of the potential end to civilization? Has he told them anything? How does he reconcile these issues? I think these individual human responses to the terrible reality is important for getting the full context of the overall effect on humanity, and it just feels kinda empty without it.

Finally, much of the writing feels sloppy. However, I think this is largely because of the translation. Translating from Chinese to English is notoriously difficult, and it comes across here. The author gives some background with certain footnotes, but it still feels like a lot is lost in translation, especially in the dialogue, which feels stilted--like two intelligent and well-educated non-english speakers are trying to communicate.

This book was good and I do not regret the few hours I spent reading it. I will probably read the next book to see where things go. But I thought this book had so much potential that was wasted.

About the Author
Jonathan Wong Jong Hann is an avid puzzle solver. He is constantly in search of new problems to take apart. He has dabbled in Rubik's Cubes, maze navigation algorithms, and various other logical and mechanical puzzles. He had taken apart OFBiz within a month for a client who wanted to evaluate it. Having mapped out the architectural structure of OFBiz, he also embarked on documenting the functional and ERP-specifi c aspects of OFBiz. Within the following six months, he had completed three small-scale projects with OFBiz. He is currently using OFBiz in almost every new project, leveraging OFBiz's advantage for rapid prototyping and development. He fi rst delved into Java some 10 years ago. He has since specialized in clean programming structures, design patterns, and parallel computing. Since then, he also picked up the hobby of reverse engineering various open source software to equip his employers and himself with new technologies. Jonathon has also worked for his employers and himself with new technologies. Jonathon has also worked for Rupert Howell, while developing Java applications for the UK's Offi ce for National Statistics, stumbled upon Open For Business and has been working with the framework ever since. Since early 2003, Rupert has been a consultant to some of the UK's largest OFBiz implementations and has helped some major retailers successfully migrate their entire ERP systems to OFBiz. Rupert holds a Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering and is a Director of Provolve Ltd, a company specializing in OFBiz-based solutions. Could have been better

"Apache OFBiz Development: The Beginner's Tutorial", by Jonathon Wong and Rupert Howell, aims to fill a niche that was completely empty until this book was published. The Apache OFBiz project is an Open Source framework for building enterprise automation applications on the Java platform. OFBiz has been used to build many business applications, but until now there wasn't a comprehensive beginner's tutorial for developers wanting to use the platform. As with many Open Source projects, freely available OFBiz documentation tends to be incomplete and not very well organized, so a book that can be read cover-to-cover and provides a good developer's tutorial is certainly welcome.

Unfortunately, this book fulfills this promise only partially. As a disclaimer, let me start by saying that I am not an OFBiz expert, having only had a passing acquaintance with its Persistence Engine, so I am not equipped to judge whether the content of this book is accurate and reasonably complete. I am indeed a beginner with respect to OFBiz, so I should be exactly the right kind of public for this book.

As the beginner that I am, I started reading the book, but soon found it very hard to keep on reading. For one thing, the text does not seem to follow a smooth, linear narrative. Its flow is continuously broken up by the use of very short sections with a big, bold title. Personally, I'd have saved on the ink and paper and coalesced small sections into bigger ones.

Another problem, at least in the early chapters, is the tendency to present simple concepts and examples, together with a promise to explain more in the rest of the chapters. I understand that you cannot present very detailed explanations right at the beginning, but this book goes just a bit overboard in leaving the reader hanging on.

The net effect of this approach is that it makes reading very difficult, after a while. This problem could be overcome by a reader with enough patience and determination, but in my case I soon started to skip sections and to peek ahead to see if there was something more interesting for me.

Sampling around, I came upon Chapter 9, "The Events" and was very perplexed. This s a short chapter which only uses the "event" word twice in the first page, without even explaining what an event is in the context of OFBiz, copies some text from page 117, then switches completely to the topics of security and access control, and of localization, none of which seems particularly event-driven to me. Maybe I am completely missing the meaning of "event" in OFBiz, but this is just one more reason to explain it properly in a beginner's tutorial.

Another aspect of the book that I was uncomfortable with is that, most of the time, the reader is treated not just as an absolute beginner with OFBiz, but as a beginner with the whole concept of developing Java web applications, to the point of showing him how to download and install the JDK. I would just state that a certain level of knowledge and past experience with the whole platform is a requirement in the preface. Showing how to install the JDK is not going to help anyone here.

To sum it up, my opinion of this book is not very good. Still, all is not bad, and I think it can be a decent tutorial for most parts of OFBiz. Since such a tutorial was definitely needed, it's a shame "Apache OFBiz Development" succeeds only partially.

This book is a must have for all ofbiz new commers

I came accross ofbiz software and found it amazing. I decided to study it but then there was no book. then i saw this book but it had not yet being released. I placed an order before it was released and I am ssssooooooooooooooooooooooo glad I did. The guys just hold your hand and tell you all. He obviously made it a tutorial and went over it such that he anticipates the mistakes you will make and warns you. Its quite amazing. I am soo glad I have this. Now I create applications just like that and He even gives quick reference to the minilang guide at the back which comes in handy. The SVN tutorial at the back is itself worth the price of the book. The book is very very practical. Its not perfect. Its got some few typos here and there, but if you have a brain that can write computer programs, you will catch the typos very easily. I will recommend it anytime i have the opportunity

It got me started!

I failed to get started with ofbiz development in the past using the online documentation and other training material. This book managed to get me up and running in no time. There was a lot more that I needed to learn after reading this book, but this book got me started. I frequently use this book as a reference. If you want a thorough understanding of ofbiz development, you will also need a good knowledge of java web app development.

This book does jump around a bit which is why I have only given it 4 stars.

About the Author
Frederick Bettelheim was a distinguished university research professor at Adelphi University and a visiting scientist at the National Eye Institute. He co-authored seven editions of INTRODUCTION TO GENERAL, ORGANIC, AND BIOCHEMISTRY, ORGANIC CHEMISTRY, and several Laboratory Manuals. He is also the author of EXPERIMENTAL PHYSICAL CHEMISTRY and co-author of numerous monographs and research articles. Professor Bettelheim received his Ph.D. from the University of California, Davis.

William H. Brown is emeritus professor of chemistry at Beloit College, where he was twice named Teacher of the Year. His teaching responsibilities include organic chemistry, advanced organic chemistry, and, more recently, special topics in pharmacology and drug synthesis. He received his Ph.D. from Columbia University under the direction of Gilbert Stork and did postdoctoral work at California Institute of Technology and the University of Arizona. He is a coauthor on ORGANIC CHEMISTRY, 10e (Cengage Learning).

Mary K. Campbell is Professor Emeritus of chemistry at Mount Holyoke College, where she taught biochemistry, general chemistry, and physical chemistry, as well as advised undergraduates working on biochemical research projects. Her avid interest in writing led to the publication of many highly successful editions of this textbook. Originally from Philadelphia, Dr. Campbell received her Ph.D. from Indiana University and completed postdoctoral work in biophysical chemistry at Johns Hopkins University. Her areas of interest include researching the physical chemistry of biomolecules, specifically, spectroscopic studies of protein-nucleic acid interactions. She is also coauthor with Shawn Farrell on BIOCHEMISTRY, 7e (Cengage Learning).

Shawn O. Farrell, a native of Northern California, received his B.S. in biochemistry from University of California, Davis, studying carbohydrate metabolism. He completed his Ph.D. in biochemistry at Michigan State University, where he focused on the study of fatty acid metabolism. Dr. Farrell became interested in biochemistry while in college, as it was relevant to his passion for bicycle racing. He raced competitively for 15 years and now officiates bicycle races worldwide. He has taught biochemistry lecture and laboratory courses at Colorado State University for 16 years and now works for USCycling. Professor Farrell has written scientific journal articles about specific research projects and about laboratory teaching, as well as articles for sports publications, such as "Salmon, Trout, and Steelheader" magazine. He is co-author with Mary Campbell on BIOCHEMISTRY, 7e (Cengage Learning).

Product details, spec OWL, somewhat confusing

**This product does not come with an OWL access code!!!** Access must be ordered separately!!. I ordered this edition here at Amazon when in a pinch of the money+time sort. I pay for all of my books and learning materials out of pocket, and could not afford the new copy with included 6mo OWL access offered at my book store when I needed it.

After combing through this site, which offers very little info, I concluded that I'd have to take the chance and assume that this book came with an access code to OWL, which didn't seem like a stretch since every other text book I've ever purchased new for math, medical whatnots, and biology has included an assess code within the book. I compared prices at the college book store (which includes an access code) and figured that the Amazon price reflected a deal which included the OWL, since the prices here at Amazon and the bookstore were not so far off. I noted that a previous reviewer stated that they did not get an OWL access code "as promised", but I could not tell if they'd purchased the book new or not.

When the book arrived, it was brand new and wrapped, but no OWL code was included. Bummer! Luckily I had just been tipped generously by a regular who had just gotten a promotion as was able to purchase an online OWL code the night before HW was due.

I now conclude that this book is not really a deal in comparison to the book store, which is a bit of a bummer since I had to wait for it to arrive (though it only took three days :) I wound up paying the same price plus a whole lot of anxiety from wondering if it would be delivered on time with OWL code. Also, the price seems to vacillate up to $20 here on the site any given the day, and I happened to order it on a +$194

Great condition-ok book content.

As this is a college textbook it provides a simplified level of the information.The subject matter seems to be "dumbed down". I have gotten more in-depth information and knowledge about chemistry from books written from the aspect that the author is writing to a reader that is interested in the subject and not merely a short synopsis of information from various topics within the field of chemistry. I am taking a beginning college level chemistry course this quarter, so this is the chosen textbook by the faculty. The book itself was in great condition, exactly as stated by the seller and I received it promptly.

About the Author
SUSAN KAISER GREENLAND developed the Inner Kids mindful awareness program, and teaches secular mindful awareness practices to children, parents, and professionals around the world. In 2000, she established the Inner Kids Foundation with her husband, author Seth Greenland, bringing mindful awareness to underserved schools and neighborhoods in Los Angeles. She was a co-investigator in a multi-year, multi-site research study at UCLA's Mindful Awareness Research Center/Semel Institute on the impact of mindfulness in education. this is a GREAT book with lots of ideas for using various activities with students and children... Add a little "Editing" and you can make these activities fit into almost any classroom or group work situation, or, simply, use them with your family .... As a Mindfulness Educator, I've been finding this book to be very helpful and a great addition to our "Mindful Library" at work...

Nice activities with rationale

Lots of good ideas. I like the inclusion of the rationale behind the exercises. Recently used a few with my client base and got good results. Good for de-stressing and relaxing.

I used the awareness meter before and after doing two of the activities back to back which helped the clients see the changes for them.

There is an activity about imagining getting hugs and another about sending good wishes to difficult people and I plan on using them together in that order. I think a lot of the activities can be put together that way for deepening the experience.

4.5 stars because the age range isn't always big enough and there could be more adaptations suggested.

Nursing Skills

I personally am not a huge fan of the way this Skills book is set up, but I love having it on hand before I go to Lab and during my personal practice time. It is well written, it could just be organized in a way that is less focused on jamming information on a page and more about the actual skills themselves. It is so great for first year students though and I loved studying with it before my first lab test!
