About the Author
Meg E. Rithmire earned her PhD in Government from Harvard University in 2011 and immediately joined the faculty of Harvard Business School as an Assistant Professor in the Business, Government, and International Economy Unit, where she primarily teaches political economy. She was a Fulbright scholar in China from 2007-8. She is a member of the American Political Science Association (and the Urban Politics section) and the Association for Asian Studies.

About the Author
Martin H. Sadd is Emeritus Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Applied Mechanics at the University of Rhode Island. He received his Ph.D. in mechanics from the Illinois Institute of Technology and began his academic career at Mississippi State University. In 1979 he joined the faculty at Rhode Island and served as department chair from 1991 to 2000. Professor Sadd’s teaching background is in the area of solid mechanics with emphasis in elasticity, continuum mechanics, wave propagation, and computational methods. He has taught elasticity at two academic institutions, in several industries, and at a government laboratory. Professor Sadd’s research has been in the area of computational modeling of materials under static and dynamic loading conditions using finite, boundary, and discrete element methods. Much of his work has involved micromechanical modeling of geomaterials including granular soil, rock, and concretes. He has authored more than 70 publications and has given numerous presentations at national and international meetings.

A good text for one semester graduate course

Took a graduate course in elasticity. Although this book was not prescribed as text, but after scrambling over half a dozen of hieroglyphic texts I stumbled upon this one. It is by no means the perfect text, but in my opinion, if you read through, its probably the easiest reads among the current graduate texts available in elasticity. Examples are well designed and helps grasp abstract theories better. I wish there were more rigorous examples worked out.

About the Author
Donald C. Mosley was Professor Emeritus of Management at the University of South Alabama and also the founder and chairman of the Synergistic Consulting Group. Earlier in his career, Dr. Mosley served as Chair of the Management Department at Mississippi State University and as a visiting professor at the University of Otago in Dunedin, New Zealand (where he helped to develop the first M.B.A. degree program in New Zealand). In 1973 he became Dean of the College of Business at the University of South Alabama in Mobile, where he helped the College become accredited by the American Assembly of Collegiate Schools of Business. In 1983, he returned to teaching, research, and consulting; and in 1999 he received the University of South Alabama Alumni Association's Outstanding Professor award and was mentioned in Who's Who Among America's Teachers.

Donald C. Mosley, Jr. is an Assistant Professor of Management at the University of South Alabama where he teaches Management Theory and Practice, Organizational Behavior, and Management Seminar. He received his Ph.D. in Business Administration from Mississippi State University. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Millsaps College and a Master of Business Administration degree from the University of South Alabama. He has conducted research in the areas of recruiting, selection, conflict management, teamwork, leadership, and partnering. As a consultant, he has been instrumental in working with organizations in the public and private sectors to implement organizational development techniques and supervisory training programs. Dr. Mosley is a member of the Academy of Management Association and the Southern Management Association.

Paul Pietri is Professor of Management at the University of South Alabama; in 1993, the Alumni Association selected him for their Outstanding Professor award. Dr. Pietri has an extensive background as a trainer/consultant to private and public sector organizations, both in North America and abroad. He has designed, administered, and conducted training at the supervisory level for organizations in thirty-five states and Canada. These include International Paper Company, Shell, Dupont, the U.S. Departments of Agriculture, Labor, and Defense, and others. He also helped design curriculum for the "Supervisory Communication" segment of Mississippi Public Television's series "Effective Communication". His writings have reflected his training and design experiences, and appeared in such journals as Training, Organizational Development Journal, Industrial Management, and others.

Meiner Meinung nach ein absolutes "muss" fuer jeden Hobbybaecker. Keine Fragen ueber den Sauerteig bleiben offen und die Erklaerungen sind ausfuehrlich und leicht verstaendlich. Der Rezepte-Teil des Buches regt an, viele neue Brotbackversuche zu unternehmen! Ich kaufte das Buch als Kindle Buch, wuerde aber anraten lieber das Buch zu kaufen, da das schnelle Durchsuchen irgendwie gewohnter ist und auch ist es leichter Vermerke direkt im Buch zu machen. Gebe zu, dass ich allerdings noch zu den "Alten" gehoere, die lieber ein buch in der Hand haben!

Coffin humor

Some Words with a Mummy, a story by Edgar Allen Poe, was originally published in the April 1845 issue of American Review: A Whig Journal. Though considered a short story, it’s a relatively long one, perhaps approaching novella length. Here Poe tries his hand at humor, and succeeds quite admirably. Despite the living dead subject matter, this is not a horror story, but rather a satire, and at times is quite hilarious.

The unnamed narrator is invited to a scientific event at the home of his friend, Dr. Ponnonner. The doctor will be opening an ancient Egyptian sarcophagus to examine the mummy within, and a select group of colleagues gather to watch. Given the title of the story, I don’t think I’m giving too much away by saying that these modern men of science have a conversation with the mummy. As the American tomb raiders grill their newfound acquaintance on life in ancient Egypt, and vice versa, it becomes difficult to tell which of the two cultures is the more advanced and which the more primitive. Poe satirizes the hubris of scientists and historians, and along the way manages to take digs at everything from the transcendentalist movement to American democracy.

I’m not a diehard Poe fan. I find his work hit-and-miss, but I enjoyed this story greatly and was impressed by his comedic skills. Here Poe exhibits the sort of cynical humor and biting wit that one might expect from Voltaire. A lot of times humor doesn’t hold up well over time, but this work, though published over a century and a half ago, is still fresh enough to make today’s reader laugh out loud.

About the Author

Mike Rosenberg is an Assistant Professor at IESE Business School. Professor Rosenberg joined the faculty at IESE after working for more than 15 years as a Management Consultant for companies such as Arthur D. Little, A.T. Kearney, and Heidrich & Struggles working in Europe, North America, and Asia.

Professor Rosenberg lectures on Strategy, Globalization, and Sustainability in IESE's MBA and executive programs. He is also Academic Director of a number of the school’s top-ranked executive education programs. In addition to his academic work, Professor Rosenberg routinely consults with leading international companies and is asked to speak on topics relating to scenario planning, sustainability, and managing global firms.

A Pragmatic Approach to Sustainability.

Businesses have been behind the sustainability curve. This book will help board members and executives to catch up. In terms of mapping a coherent sustainability strategy Mike Rosenberg develops an excellent framework that gives shape to the lenses that opposing stakeholders have in this discussion. The strategy challenges for stakeholders who, at times, are on the same side though one would not have guessed it, Rosenberg articulates in terms of their starting point or kick off; time and timing; focus; risk management; the role played by government and the purpose of a strategy. He draws on numerous examples and case studies to illustrate his argument. (Full disclosure: The writer of this review is mentioned on Page 19 on the hard cover edition.)
Readers will find that Rosenberg is essentially pragmatic. After many years of board level experience he stays away from the abstract and remains at all times hands-on, an approach that will facilitate an ongoing discussion that should be taking place in many board rooms today.
