Lovely Collection of Updated Patterns From the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s
By Lynne E.
SWEATER GIRLS is a lovely collection of classic designs from the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s--all updated by two well-known designers, Weston and Taylor--that use currently available yarns and are sized for today's women. The patterns are divided into four types: pretty tops (7 designs), cute cardigans (4), starlet sweaters (6), twinsets & two-pieces (3), and finishing touches (4). The four "finishing touches" are a thick lace stole, a Fair Isle beret, lace stockings, and lace wrist warmers. The modern yarns used include merino, angora, cotton, bamboo, cashmere, alpaca, and silk--some of them suitably glamorous for the movie-star-inspired designs.
My favorite design is the "Wallis pleated cardigan", with wide ribbed waist (to the bust line), ribbed shoulders, gathers at the bust, narrow roll collar, and button-front. This style is flattering to most figures, and so versatile it can be worn with almost anything. I also love the "Ava angora bolero", a fuzzy angora shrug with curved fronts and a beaded band of ribbing.
Many of the patterns will probably look best on full-figured women (like the "sweater girls" who inspired the designs). However, in addition to "Wallis", the demure and alluring "Kate lace-panel blouse", with its short sleeves and scoop neckline and openwork fabric, should look great on anyone.
If you're looking for elegance, you will probably love the "Natalie feather-stitch sweater", a long-sleeve pullover with a round scoop neck and allover vertical rows of feather stitch. A tailored look can be had with the "Celia Lacy Fine-Knit Twinset", comprised of a short-sleeved pullover with a stylized panel of chevrons, and a v-neck cardigan that uses the same chevron pattern in a band along the fronts and around the neckline.
There isn't a single pattern in this book that I wouldn't want to knit! (Of course, I really love the "vintage" look in knitting patterns.) Most of the designs call for fine yarn, knitted on US 2 or US 3 needles, and for shaping. These designs require patience--they'll take a while to knit because of the fine yarns used--but I think they can be knit by adventurous intermediate as well as advanced knitters. There are many full-color photos of the sweaters, usually shown on models in luxurious surroundings but sometimes shown on hangers as well.
If you love vintage knitting patterns, and have some old patterns that you'd like to adapt for yourself, then you might also be interested in Vintage Design Workshop: Knitting Techniques for Modern Style. I like SWEATER GIRLS better, because the authors have already done all the work of updating these fabulous classic patterns for us knitters.

Nice patterns - but no schematics!
By Obsessed Knitter
The directions are clear. I like how the looks were updated. The big drawback is that the sizes are stated: To fit rather than giving the actual dimensions of the finished garment. A schematic of the garments would be helpful as the measurements provided in minimal - length to back neck and Underarm sleeve length - hardly adequate. Now I have to do the simple calculations based on the given gauge and draw my own schematic so I can make the appropriate adjustments to get a garment that fits me.

cute
By laurie
cute patterns and the instructions are clear. I've made a couple of the sweaters. its true that they aren't for plus sizes, just for standard S/M/L sizes. one cardigan is even just a one size fits all pattern. The book doesn't hide that fact though, and is pretty clear in the intro about taking the old one-size patterns and making them sized for "modern women", which they don't indicate necessarily means plus sized. I like that its a flexible paperback with a sturdy cover, with flaps on both covers so you can use them as book marks. The patterns aren't for a beginner, since they use lace techniques etc however if you're an ambitious beginner you could use these patterns as a way of learning as you go. the pictures are fantastic. I love that they cover the spectrum of different types and brands of yarn they use.
