Review
"Powerful . . . a fiendish story told with Katzenbach's usual skill and professionalism. . . . This is an exceptional novel—and a most troubling one."—Washington Post

"Katzenbach reinvents the formula several times over in this absolutely gripping novel."—Booklist (starred review)

"I raced through this book. . . . I read a ton of novels in this genre and thought I had the ending figured out within the first fourth of the book or so. Wrong. Even if you are a better guesser than I am, you will be entranced with What Comes Next. Don’t miss it."—BookReporter

"Reading What Comes Next is an experience akin to riding the scariest roller coaster ride: You gulp with the rush of both trepidation and excitement—and you sigh with relief when it's over."—New York Journal of Books

"Katzenbach has crafted a suspenseful cat-and-mouse thriller, a perfect literary mash-up of The Truman Show and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. Already an international best seller, this will be widely popular with psychological thriller devotees."—Library Journal

A frightening and brilliantly constructed tale
By PianoBoat
Wow! John Katzenbach really impressed me with this beautifully constructed thriller. I found it to be imaginative and believable, and stocked with characters the reader ends up truly caring about. Katzenbach weaves in fascinating backgrounds that add depth to the actors as the story plays out, and what a great story it is.
Jennifer, an attractive young teen, is brutally kidnapped just as she has begun a desperate escape from her abusive home. The only witness to the abduction is Professor Adrian Thomas, whose mind is rapidly being destroyed by a rare disease, and he must rise to the challenge if there is to be any hope of saving Jennifer.
These and other compelling characters, and Jennifer's desperate plight, combine to create a complex and well-developed tale that's hard to put down.

Don't waste your money on this one--huge disappointment
By Roxanne V.
I've been a big Katzenbach fan since Hart's War but this one is just awful.
Poorly conceived, very unpleasant subject matter, caricatures rather than characters, and downright ridiculous at many points in his narrative, particularly dead advice-giving relatives that pop up just when advice is needed. How contrived and corny.

It's hard to believe that the same author that gave us The Madman's Tale has offered up such drivel this time around.

If you like novels with glacial pacing...
By Brian Baker
... then this is the book for you.

And more power to you. As for me, I'm giving up on page 194 out of 448, otherwise I'd have to shoot myself.

The main characters:

An aging psychology professor rapidly sinking into terminal dementia who witnesses a kidnapping, then spends endless pages of this book "talking" with his dead relatives as they coach him on what he should do to make the investigation move forward. Gooooood grief...

The cop looking into the victim's disappearance, a single mom with two kids who escaped marriage to an abusive husband and who's so freakin' dense that by this point in the book - almost halfway through - she STILL doesn't believe a kidnapping even took place.

A mixed-gender couple of psycho-sexual deviants who kidnap then murder their victims so they can stage live-cam internet "performances" for other perverts to view on the web for big-buck subscription fees. Every time the book spent time - WAY too much time - on these pervs I felt like I needed to take a shower and disinfect the book.

A "troubled" teen victim who's run away from home a couple of times in the past, and now finds herself prisoner and the "star" of the internet show, though by this point in the book she's still just going over her angst... endlessly.

The victim's cartoonishly disagreeable parents.

Etcetera, ad infinitum, ad nauseum.

I've been a fan of Katzenbach's work right from his debut with "In the Heat of the Summer", and I can't believe he wrote such inane and - frankly - disgusting drivel. But I don't see any other names on the book's jacket, so I guess he did.

Do yourself a favor. Avoid this mess like the plague. It's more fun driving in rush hour traffic.
