Great Artwork, But Ultimately Just Way Too Small!

I am a big fan of Marc Silvestri as he really had a lot to do with the huge growth in popularity that we have seen the last 10-15 years in the bad girl genre of the comic market. Marc Silvestri, along with a small handful of other artists, brough something to that side of the industry that had been severly lacking, overall quality. The bad girl genre really started to take off in the 80's and early 90's, but the quality of the artwork itself was really questionable at best. In all honesty, most of it was pretty bad. It was about as anatomically inaccurate as one could hope to get. The women had breats that were bigger than their heads, legs that were longer than thier upper body, and hair that would shock even Rapunzel herself. Its was hyper sexualized artwork with very few redeeming qualities. The best artists usually stayed away from the bad girl genre of the comic market as it simply didnt command the respect that other genre's had.

Then everything started to change in the mid to late 90's. The start of Witchblade was one of the key moments in the genre. It signaled a major shift in how bad girls were drawn and artists like Marc Silvestri, Michael Turner, and Brian Pulido were at the forefront of this change. Instead of cheesy drawings with ridiculous anatomical features, you started seeing bad girls rendered with far more realistic poses and anatomical accurate features. Not to mention the overall quality of the work was just a HUGE step forward as this small group of artists were extremely talented. These artists really brought a sense of quality to the bad girl genre that had never existed before and the end result was nothing less than a huge explosion in popularity for the entire genre.

Witchblade #1 was really the start of my bad girl collecting. Its since become one of my favorite genre's in the comic industry. I have a lot of respect for Marc Silvestri as he is an amazing artist and he played a very large role in the overall transformation of this genre of the comic market. All that being said, this art book is a bit disappointing as its less than 100 pages. Given the amount of work that Marc Silvestri has done, they could have easily doubled, even tripled, the overall size of this book. The artwork that is here looks amazing. Unfortunatey, there just isnt a lot here. In all honesty, this is the smallest art book I have purchased in a very long time. Such a shame as Marc Silvestri has a ton of quality work. I just don't understand the decision to go with such a small book.

Bottom line - if your a big fan of Marc Silvestri than your definitely going to want to pick this up. It may be short, but the artwork that is here is amazing. My advice, just be patient and wait for it to go on sale. Personally, I would love to see Marc create a 2nd volume, one that was at least 200 pages long. Until then, this one will have to do!

If you love Awesome artwork, buy this.

I am an aspiring comic book artist and a fan of Marc Silvestri's work and this was a great purchase for me. It details a nice amount of Marc's artwork ranging from Marvel, DC and to Top Cow. This book shows off a lot of Marc's un-inked pencils which gives the reader and better idea of how detailed and beautiful Marc Silvestri's artwork is. My only issue with the book is that it would have been great if they would have included some interviews with Marc so we could understand his creative process on certain pieces. The other thing is that this book is over priced. For what they charge for the Hard Cover you should receive a bio about Marc Silvestri, interviews from co works and others in the industry and the history of Top Cow. Ultimately I love great artwork so I purchased the TPB and I am glad that I did. If anything I think that Marc Silvestri's work is under appreciated and if you choose to purchase this book you will understand why I feel that way.

A pleasure to read!

This book is a pleasure to read. It delivers on the promises in the description. It's a very informative overview for an old-schooler who wants to delve into the "next generation" database systems. It's very well-written, so it's not overwhelming. It doesn't talk down to you, but is not annoyingly informal or patronizing. Best of all, it gives a lot of detail, and gets it all right! Until I read this book, most books I found were either focused on one topic, or got a lot of things wrong. Guy does not bash, oversell, or make inaccurate statements. And, he makes it eminently readable. It's a pleasure to find a book with the breadth, depth, accuracy, and readability of this one! Cheers to the author for sharing his findings with us!

This book aims to help you choose the correct database technology, in the era of Big Data, NoSQL, and NewSQL, how does it fare?

This book is aimed at “enterprise architects, database administrators, and developers who need to understand the latest developments in database technologies”. Some existing knowledge of databases (relational and NoSQL) is useful in understanding the book.

Below is a chapter-by-chapter exploration of the topics covered.

Part I: Next Generation Databases

Chapter 1 Three Database Revolutions

The book opens with a diagram showing the timeline of major database releases, being divided into: pre-relational (1950-1972), relational (1972-2005), and Next Generation (2005-2015). This book is concerned with the Next Generation databases, but first a bit of history and context...

The chapter takes a brief look at the first database revolution, involving Database Management Systems (DBMS) such as hierarchical databases (e.g. IMS) and network databases (e.g. IDMS) , running on mainframes. These systems were relatively inflexible and difficult to maintain.

Next, the second database revolution is examined, concerned with the widely used relational databases (RDBMS). These are based on relational theory, with its tuples, relations, constraints, normalization, and transactions. The widespread adoption of SQL enhanced their usage.

The chapter next looks at the third database revolution, initiated by massive internet growth which created pressure on RDBMS scalability. Realising this, Google, the largest website, looked at how the growing amounts of data could be processed in a timely manner. Google published 3 influential papers, one about a distributed file system, the second about distributing processing (MapReduce), and the third about a distributed database (BigTable). These ideas later formed the basis of Hadoop.

Other related concurrent changes occurred in technology, including the growth of cloud computing, providing elastic resource usage and cost. Also, the use of JavaScript Object Notation (JSON) enabled easier storing/serialization of objects to disk, helping overcome the object/relational impedance mismatch, eventually leading to data being stored in document databases (e.g. MongoDB).

The old relational architecture was re-examined by Stonebraker in 2007, who suggesting making changes relating to in-memory and columnar databases, this became NewSQL. There is a brief overview of the non-relational database explosion. The author acknowledges NoSQL is an unfortunate term, since it defines what the database isn’t rather than what it is.

The chapter ends with the conclusion that there is no longer a one-size-fits-all database solution. Unlike the relational model, the NoSQL databases do not have a common architectural pattern. The growth of the Internet of Things (IoT), social media, and ever increasing amounts of (often unstructured) data, all indicate the growing need for scalable Next Generation databases.

This chapter provides a great overview of each database revolution, in the context of broader technology changes. It is the best overall explanation of what happened in database world, together with its underlying reasons, I’ve read.

There are a few small errors e.g. “... a huge number of relational database systems emerged in the first half of the 2000s”, this should read ‘Next Generation’ instead of ‘relational’.

The chapter is easy to read, with useful explanations, considered discussions, helpful diagrams, inter-chapter references, and website links. These traits apply to the whole of the book.

This book aims to help you choose the correct database technology, in the era of Big Data, NoSQL, and NewSQL, and succeeds. The book is generally easy to read, with useful explanations, considered discussions, helpful diagrams, inter-chapter references, and website links.

The main types of NoSQL database (key-value, graph, document, columnar) are described, as are the newer relational database features (NewSQL). It certainly helps explain the recent database changes in the context of web innovation.

It might have been useful to have a matrix containing details of what type of database to choose for specific scenarios. The book has useful (but unannotated) links for further information at the end of each chapter, these would be better annotated, and placed on the page they are referenced. The book has no introduction (except the back cover), and although the book is split into 2 sections, they are not discussed – a roadmap would be useful.

This book will prove useful to anyone who wants to know how to choose an appropriate database solution in these changing times, and how we arrived at the current mixture of disparate databases. Highly recommended.

Now eagerly awaiting the third installment

It was unputdownable. But I finished it so I had to put it down. Remarkable attention to historical detail while solving some of the mystery we saw in the first installment, “Blood, Love and Steel.” Now she’s compounded the enigmatic character of Athos and expanded earlier mysteries that perhaps will be addressed in the third installment, which can’t come soon enough.

Deft sensual writing that moves the story along quickly while painting rich portraits of the manipulative schemer vs. the earnest dupe. Turning on the struggles of a young hero reminiscent of Saint Augustine's, the novel is a brilliant prequel to the first book in the series, now wanting a third... Hmm, not unlike a certain female antagonist... A great weekend read!

Jennifer M. Fulford's writing has only gotten better! The story is so interesting, the details are so vivid, and her understanding of the characters so established and clear that this book is hard to put down and easy to enjoy! It's the perfect novel if you're interested in romance as well as characters who are flawed but never boring or unsympathetic!

poor teaching tool

this is one of the most unorganized, vague, incomplete text books I have come across. Not enough information is given to complete the drawings in the exercises. Much more attention should have been devoted to actually showing how piping is drawn rather than how to look up specs in tables. My fellow students harbor the same complaints. Find a better book.
