Huge ripoff, you'd be better off googling Nintex for free

This book is a remarkable ripoff. It looks like it's just copied and pasted from the help section on the Nintex website. It's loaded with formatting errors, misaligned text, typos, and simple copy/paste errors. Most of the volume of this book is empty page space.

A must for Kon fans

Satoshi Kon is easily one of my favorite filmmakers. He's one of the rare types that can tell any style of story and make it uniquely his.

Andrew Osmond's book The Illusionist details this one of a kind filmmaker and his works.

If you're not familiar with Kon's work you may want to rent some before reading, since much of this book is simply an in-depth dissection of his stories.

The book is broken into 6 parts- one for Kon's early life and career and one for each of his films and TV series. Each work has a brief summary, a plot breakdown, a more detailed analysis and a sidebar of interesting facts.

Personally, I would have liked more insight into Kon himself and less plot breakdowns of his films, all of which I've seen multiple times. There's not much of a point in this book catering to anyone but established fans, so you might as well not talk much about things people already know

I at least would like to have seen pictures of Kon's actual drawings rather than just screen-caps and promo stills.

I will say the book prompted me to rewatch Millennium Actress for the first time in quite a while as well as try to purchase the now hard to come by DVDs of Paranoia Agent. So even though I would have liked to see this book done differently, it has made me better appreciate one of my favorite filmmakers. So if you're already a big fan of Satoshi Kon, this book may be right up your alley.

Welcome to the (un)real world

Satoshi Kon is somewhat of a rarity these days: a touted maker of anime who is also a respected filmmaker. Although his first major release in the US was 2007's "Paprika", he made three prior films: "Perfect Blue", "Millennium Actress", and "Tokyo Godfathers", as well as the 13-episode TV series "Paranoia Agent." All of them are different, and all of them are complex, but they are all undeniably Kon's.

In this book, Andrew Osmond has done a fine job getting under the surface of these works. He devotes a chapter to each, examining its origins, followed by a plot synopsis and critical analysis. Each chapter also features sidebars full of additional interesting information; kind of like an extra commentary track. The book is full of quotes from Kon himself, taken from many sources, including interviews conducted by Osmond. Osmond also includes a brief biography of Kon, and chronicles his rise through the anime industry (this bit is also an interesting look at the industry itself). This book isn't a superficial highlight reel, but a serious and critical study of the psychology and history of Kon and his work.

Osmond has obviously done his homework, making comparisons to characters and trends spanning all five of Kon's releases, as well as other anime. He has a clear understanding of what Kon is trying to say, and communicates his observations and theories in easy-to-follow, entertaining prose. While Osmond is clearly a fan of Kon and his work, he has no problem pointing out what he considers to be inconsistencies or shortcomings. He keeps his analysis objective, which makes it all the more valuable. The book is also quite up-to-date, mentioning Kon's next project, "The Dream Machine", currently scheduled for a 2010 release.

This book is not for newcomers to Kon. It is rife with spoilers, and it must be noted that Kon's anime deals with adult subject matter, such as sex and violence (unlike directors like Miyazaki, none of Kon's current catalog is suitable for children). However, Osmond's book is a perfect and rewarding companion for those familiar with Kon, as well as those who want to learn more about this intriguing artist. The book is insightful, well-researched, and intelligent, while still being an entertaining read. Osmond deserves much credit for keeping the book moving swiftly, while not glossing over the complicated subjects of Kon's anime.

Most of Kon's work deals with reality and how the perception of his characters affects that reality. Kon's characters are three-dimensional, and seem like real people despite being animated. Each of Kon's work is bursting with creativity, but for different reasons. Whether it's the shifting of reality in "Millennium Actress" and "Paprika", the antics of "Tokyo Godfathers", or the examination of the effects of guilt and identity in "Paranoia Agent" and "Perfect Blue", Kon examines what it means to be human with a flair that's quite unlike any other contemporary filmmaker.

While it can be argued that each of Kon's works may be labeled fantasy, it is not always clear exactly what Kon considers to be fantasy or reality (Osmond tends to agree). Kon's anime gives an equal workout to the mind and the heart, and does not always tie up events with a neat bow.

Satoshi Kon is one of the most interesting and talented directors in contemporary cinema, and Osmond's fascinating and carefully written book gives Kon the attention he deserves.

SATOSHI KON!

the loss of Satoshi Kon from the anime ranks is felt deeply- though Makato Shinkai is looked upon as a spiritual successor he is not quite the same. This book helps bring some elements in perspective. I would like to see Paranoia Agent finally get a re-release- but hey - that's the problem with copyright- the owner dies and the last copyright holding company is out of business and we are left losing out on a masterpiece work.

his last work - dreaming machine will probably never be published- though one of his coworkers promised to - not enough was done prior to Satoshi Kon's death-i am afraid if we see anything it will be an unfinished work- and we will be left wondering where he would have taken us if he was still alive

Recipes always get RAVE reviews

Like the other reviewers, my grandmother discovered this set in the 60's (she purchased the 12 individual volumes as 'weekly rewards' from her local supermarket). My mom was so impressed with the recipes that she set out to collect her own set, which we used to cook many marvelous dinners. A couple of times each month, my sister and brother and I had to take turns picking a main course, vegetable dish, or dessert from the books; provide Mom with a list of ingredients; and then cook the meals ourselves (with a little bit of Mom's help). The rule was we always had to pick something we had never had before. It was a great success. We discovered many great dishes that were used again and again to cook for special occasions and/or when company came.

I was so excited to find a complete used set at a garage sale after I had my own home and family. Eventually, over the years, I acquired newer, 'fancier' cookbooks and this set sat neglected until the last year or so when I've re-discovered how surprisingly tasty many of the recipes are. And, as another reviewer mentioned, there is a surprising variety of international and regional recipes. My husband and son never fail to give two thumbs up to the dinners I've cooked from it recently. We are surprised at the amazing flavors in many of the recipes given that they came from a time when blander cooking seemed to be the trend.

Woman's Day Encyclopedia of Cookery

A wedding gift received in 1966, this set has been my best resource for just about any food topic of interest. Now when the grandchildren ask about a food related subject like e.g. nutmeg, I tell them to look it up in the WD Encyclopedia. It's food stained, cat chewed, has moved to Australia and back, and it's still my favorite resource. Encyclopedia was the right name for it. Many recipes have become family favorites.

Brought tears to her eyes!

I purchased this for a friend who, in a move, had lost the entire set. When I got it for her and gave it to her - she literally cried! She was SO thrilled to receive the entire set - which can be hard to find. It was in 'good' condition - a little dirty, but nothing that can't be cleaned. Also a GREAT price for the entire set. It made her day and I'm sure she will have many years of happy cooking! Thank you Amazon!

Because of Romek is a nonfiction, autobiographical narrative about the experiences of a teenager during the Holocaust of World War II. This is the riveting, true story of a young boy's survival in the face of Nazi atrocities.

In the mid-1960s, the German government contacted David Faber to testify against Nazi war criminals. Until then, he did not know that his older brother, Romek, whom the Nazis had tortured to death many years earlier, had been involved in a Polish Underground plot to avert Nazi Germany's ability to create an atomic bomb. When David finally agreed to testify, he began to relive all the horrors of his experiences during the war: concentration camps, murders, tortures, starvation, and disease. When David Faber was 13 years old, he had witnessed the Nazi murders of his parents, brother Romek, and five of his six sisters. He survived nine concentration camps between the ages of 13-18, from 1939 to 1945, including Auschwitz and Buchenwald. When he was liberated in 1945 from the concentration camp Bergen-Belsen, he weighed a mere 72 pounds. Because of Romek fulfills David's promise to his dead mother that he would survive and tell the world about the horrors committed against him and his family.

This moving narrative is also a useful tool for educators. To today's students, the Holocaust too often seems to be an abstract event in the dim past. Because of Romek pulls the reader into the story, thereby illuminating the past and putting a face on history.

Stunning Account

This stunning memoir of David Faber is not to be missed by students of the Holocaust. Having just read "Death Dealer" by Nazi commandant Rudolph Hoess, I got a fuller picture of the institution of the death camp. Faber's recounting of dates, places, and persons matches Hoess's in startling detail. His determination to resist victimhood steels his resolve to survive, and his story is also laced with vignettes of those who offered kindness in the midst of the hellish nightmare. Faber is such a model for today's youth! I agree that this would make excellent supplemental reading for high school history students. I work in secondary ed. and recommend "Because of Romek".

A near impossible story of survival

I have read many books on WWII, and this one fills-in still more gaps and details missing for anyone who has not personally "been there" (like me).

This book reads indeed like a personal memoire, and seems with each passing page to add another layer of history and, of repeated events. One can almost begin to feel the numbing and dulling effects of observing up close, daily murder, suffering & disease. The days and months seem at once to pass overnight and also to evidence the immense weight born daily, by those who felt every minute, every breath of it. As readers we come close to feeling the routines repeated as a new Camp is entered, as "rows of five" are made and sensless beatings and murder played-out for all to see. It was for me, this very thing that made this account so personal, and allowed me for a short time, to see how I might begin to live and survive in such a daily environment. The details in this account are different and not so vivid as others, but actually recreate for the reader that heavy sense of despair and daily futility.

Read this and weep - think deeply upon the evil in humanity and the millions that were lost. Think long, and begin living deliberately.

OMG - You gotta read this book (brutal history)

A must read. Heard a radio interview with either the author or maybe one his children not too long ago & was compelled to buy/read this book. The story is the most unbelievable/believable thing I've ever read. I just don't know how a person can experience so much. This book is so needed today by our youth.

Story of a girl who never wanted to marry but still happily became "The Malhotra Bride"!

Sunita is just twenty and bubbling with excitement to start her dream life of a career woman where she is free and self independent. But her parents have different ideas. They want her married as soon as possible. Her father her even set his eyes on a most suitable match for her. The only son of the illustrious Malhotra family, who own the Malhotra garments, Akshay is his choice. Despite Sunita's objections, a date is set for the two families to meet and Sunita is told to be ready.

What will Sunita do?

She doesnt want to get married so soon. She wants to be someone. Stand on her own feet. But this is not the trend in her house. Gokul Rishi, her father, "was a very strict father and strongly believed that women should be occasionally seen and never heard." Ever since her childhood, Sunita had to fight for every single thing in her life and her ally in all these conquests was her grandfather. This time, however, even her grandfather is helpless and she is on her own.

Akshay on the other hand is also against an arranged marriage and feels that his current life of "work hard and play harder" is working quite well without the added stress of marriage. A clean and sweet love story of a girl who wants to be free to live her life as she wishes but is forced to conform to age old traditions is very beautifully and interestingly narrated by Sundari in her new book, The Malhotra Bride.

The characterization is expertly done and each character plays its part to perfection. Sunita is headstrong as well as innocent in many ways. She craves the love of her parents and often does things she doesn't agree to just to please them. Her parents, Gokul and Leela are as conservative as they come. Gokul is strict and often behaves like he is superior to his wife and daughters just because he is a man. Leela has adapted her life as per her husband's wishes and does anything in her power to comply to him even when she doesn't agree to his actions. Sandhya, Sunita's elder sister, is her opposite in every way. She is happy to conform to all traditions and even got married at her parent's bidding at the tender age of eighteen. Then there is her grandfather who is quite practical and modern in his outlook and has always supported Sunita in her attempts at getting a degree and living her life as per her wishes. Akshay is our modern guy but still very respectful towards his parents and although educated abroad, cherishes his culture. Akshay's parents are modern day, practical parents who don't believe that a woman's place is in the kitchen and Mr. Malhotra has always encouraged his wife to stand on her own feet and live as she wants.

There are varied characters here and it is quite interesting to study them. I could empathize with Sunita and feel her helplessness. Even though its the twenty first century and people act all modern but still there are some who are still stuck in the age old version of traditions that give men more power over women. They don't want to move on with time and often force their family also to comply with them. Gokul's character is one such reflection of such people. Meanwhile Akshay's family stands for the practical minded people who value their family's happiness over traditions and are willing to change with time.

The scenes with Sunita and Akshay were warm, happy and fun moments where I definitely felt that true love originates from friendship. People become friends first before becoming lovers. The writing style of Sundari is simple yet very captivating and she is able to hold the reader and keep him engrossed in the story till the very end.

I loved this breezy love story which will connect with you instantly and you will feel like it is your own story or a story of a known person in your life. A story that is heart touching and which will leave you feeling happy and warm, I give The Malhotra Bride a 4 out of 5 and recommend that you read this sweet story of a girl who never wanted to marry but still happily became The Malhotra Bride!

Interesting idea spirals into debauchery - waste of time

It has a fun premise but is severely underdeveloped. The character lack depth and don't make sense. The sex at the end is a disappointing turn. A girl brought up strictly suddenly becomes a sexpot? An ambitious man with goals and a playboy history suddenly loses his mind at the sight of a beautiful girl? What started as a fun idea quickly turned into a muddled mess and ends in a cesspool of lust solely for the sake of titillation.

Reverence, Innocence & Love

The Malhotra Bride; Sunita is a 20 something girl who is still trying to find herself in a world that is trying to mould her into a submissive puppet like most Indian women. That she finds her prince charming right at the first encounter is both unsettling and enchanting for her.

The premise of the story is the liberation of Sunita; who becomes a Malhotra Bride and how it is a win-win situation for both Akshay – billionaire hunk and Sunita – a beautiful damsel.
The story reminded of how it was to be so young and carefree, looking at the world with starry eyes. Dreams and hopes to fulfill and goals to achieve, even the naivety of Sunita reminded me of a time long forgotten in the grind of life.

It made me nostalgic, of first love, that innocent kiss that turned into something to cherish and those hot tempered tiffs that landed me into hotter fun. The straight forward storyline has a few quick surprises and naughty turns that mange to keep the interest going till the last page.

It is a novel for young hearts as well as old because Sundari has been able to strike a beautiful balance between the modern younger generation that manages to cherish the values and ethics of the old.

I recommend this as a read for everyone who values love and family from 18 years to 80 years because this simple romance novella shows that it is possible to love and respect both your lover and your families.

Do pick it as it is the perfect summer read – fresh, fascinating yet packs a punch!
