Informative and funny

I reluctantly gave this book a try after hearing Dr. Robert M. Price recommend it on his Bible Geek podcast. I say reluctantly because I was not overly impressed by the previous Bo Bennett book Price recommended, "The Concept". This time, however, the book was a worthwhile purchase.

The book is perfectly described by the subtitle, "The Ultimate Collection of Over 300 Logical Fallacies". One might quibble about whether they are all *logical* fallacies but all are well explained and well demonstrated by good examples. The examples are not only instructive but in most cases funny as well. Mr. Bennett has a great sense of humor and the book is a joy to read; it's hard to put it down without reading "just one more".

One can deduce Bennett's position on a lot of issues by the examples he constructs and/or chooses. It doesn't dilute the thrust of the book unduly but one does get the impression one might be getting instruction in more than logical fallacies.

I purchased the Kindle edition and it was formatted perfectly; everything worked as it should. Usually I complain about the progress bar having too few chapter marks. In this case the opposite problem reared its head; the progress bar was virtually all chapter marks.

My only complaint is the spotty editing. There are numerous cases where you have words like "show" instead of "shown" and "clout" instead of "cloud". Nothing too serious and standard fare for self published works like this but noticeable.

helpful but dry

This is a useful book if one just wants a brief exposure to many fallacies. The writer is clear, succinct, and amusing at times. He organizes 300 fallacies alphabetically. This may be useful if you know what to label the fallacy you are interested in but not so helpful if you want to learn what type of fallacy may be present in speech or writing that one encounters in daily life. It would be more useful to classify them into types or groups although he does say that there is no agreement on how to organize fallicies. At the end of the book he does list the 25 most common fallacies with links to his descriptions.

All in all, not a bad book as an introduction. It was a bit dry to read. I ended up reading small sections at any one sitting. I will be looking for other books an this topic for a more thorough and hopefully readable account.

Too Many Examples from Religion.

Somewhat, I've learned some arguments from Logically Fallacious, yet it's too encyclopedic that I can't remember a lot either. I think it's the constant use of religious example that zoned me out too much. It would have been nice if the author used real, actual examples (he did it one for the beauty pageant contender, but more, please). All in all, there's too much religion in Logically Fallacious, and most of it is pointless to me.

Memo to the author: It's not "The reason why is because..." but "The reason why is that..."

NOT USABLE FOR CODING OR LEARNING ON KINDLE OR IPAD

This format is not functional on an ipad or Kindle. The print book is 8 1/2 x 11 with small print. At most you can see 1/4 of a page at one time. Page size can't be changed and could not be viewed on my PC. My expert suggestion is to stay with a print book or use a PDF formatted e-book on your PC.

Good study guide for real world research

I had to use this book in my Environmental Studies class at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Now that I live in North Carolina and study at the University of Maryland (online), I still do find it helpful when I'm in the field. A little hard to understand if you've never done field work, but once you work in the field, it falls into place. Not really for novices.

Great books for elementary kids who love dragons!

My son is crazy about dragons so when he discovered these books he just HAD to have them. Nice boxed set comes with the first 5 books (which was good since he had bought the first one over the summer and trashed the cover since he read it so many times!). Great read for my 2nd grader.
