Possibly the most important book on Islam you will ever ...

Possibly the most important book on Islam you will ever read. It goes beyond the simplistic characterizations of peaceful and violent Muslims, but delves into the theology that undergirds modern Islam in many of its variants. It will surprise you, anger you, but also give you hope. The origins of peaceful Muslims are discussed, but in a very nuanced way that doesn't give way to naivete about the theological consensus. Give it a read no matter how you feel about Islam: you will learn a lot. Robert Spencer does his homework and hardly indulges in gross simplifications. He takes on claims about Islam head on with citations from Islams respected scholarly authorities, leaders, and historical accounts.

As an Arabic linguist who has read the Koran, Mr. Spencer made crystal clear quite a few charming concepts that went completely over my head the first time. For example, "those whom your right hands possess" doesn't sound nearly so innocuous when you realize this is Koranic euphemism for slaves (something this "perfect book" takes completely for granted).

As is often the case with this author's works, the free world ignores him at their own peril.

I liked the fact that Mr

I liked the fact that Mr. Spencer did not tell me what to think about the Koran ,but rather what it said and allowed me to make up my own mind. The refferences were broad and many to get an idea that this book was not his own idea, but others as well. Match it with the Koran in english and you get the big picture. Good read.

About the Author
Linda�Sue Park is the author of historical and contemporary fiction, poetry, and picture book texts for young readers. Her third book, A Single Shard, received the 2002 Newbery Medal. Ms. Park is now one of the most prominent figures in the children's literature community and has traveled widely, both nationally and internationally, to promote her books.She is Korean American, from the Midwest; was educated at Stanford University and University College Dublin;�and has worked as an advertising copywriter, a journalist, and a teacher of English as a second language. She lives in Rochester, NY, with her husband. They have two grown children.

Bagram Ibatoulline was born in Omsk, Russia, and attended the State Academic Institute of Arts in Moscow. He has worked in fine arts, graphic arts, mural design, and textile design, and is adept at painting in different styles. Among the many successful children's books he has illustrated is the Newbery Medal book The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane. He lives in Gouldsboro, Pennsylvania.

Subtle and engaging

As a child listening to the Nativity story, author Linda Sue Park always wondered what myrrh was. No one else ever asked, Linda writes in an author's note at the end of "The Third Gift." She thought that meant everyone knew except for her. It wasn't until she was an adult that she learned it was used in incense, perfume, embalming oil, wine additive and medicinal herb.

We all play a part in history, and most often, our role remains unknown until long after we've moved on. "The Third Gift" celebrates one of those unknown roles in the Nativity story. There are no bells and whistles, elves or sparkling lights in Linda's book. Yet it tells more of what the holiday season is about than many of its contemporaries.

The young boy and his father are unassuming. And while their daily work is important to them, there is nothing particularly glamorous about it. It's the simple caring actions of the father -- depicted beautifully by artist Bagram Ibatoulline -- as he shows his son his trade. Most of the book takes place away from the city, and the quietness of the landscape contributes to the reverence of the book.

"The Third Gift" is an excellent choice for those who are looking to go beyond Santa Claus and his elves. It's a lovely picture book that many would be happy displaying where visitors can see.

Engaging book for Christmas & Epiphany

Using the biblical texts regarding the gifts of the wisemen as starting reference, Parks develops a fictional story of them acquiring the myrrh. Doesn't take place at the nativiy but is a precursor story - with the magi traveling through a marketplace looking for the third gift to take to the baby King. Most of the book shares the story of a young boy and his father, who gathers and sells the resin myrrh - called "tears". The boy is learning the trade from his father, who is the best collector. The illustrations are beautiful; really feel authentic to the region and time. Great way to learn all about where myrrh comes from, how it is collected, what it was used for, while giving a little glimpse into the possible life of those living in the middle east at that time. It is an engaging story of ordinary people involved in an extraordinary event. Has fairly extensive author notes that give more info on myrrh and the biblical references.

Wonderful!

What do you get when you combine a Newbery winning author and a fabulous illustrator? You get a book like this one. The story is told beautifully in just the right amount of words and illustrations that put you, the reader, into the background of the story. I felt almost like I was there watching the young boy and his father harvest tree resin.

I remember the first time I heard the story of the wise men, I, like many others, had no idea what frankincense and myrrh were. Gold is pretty self-explanatory, but frankincense and myrrh? I had no clue. I admit I just barely learned that frankincense came from trees. This book taught me that myrrh also comes from trees and has symbolic relevance to Jesus Christ beyond being a valuable gift. I had no idea that Myrrh was traditionally used primarily at funerals to show respect and caring to the departed. I appreciated the author's note at the end explaining the origins of the story and the author's interest in the subject.

As for the illustrations, what can I say beyond that they are gorgeous. They show so beautifully the tender story of a father patiently teaching his son the art of harvesting the trees. What a sweet and powerfully symbolic story. I can't recommend this book highly enough. I loved it, definitely one of my favorites this year.

War, Politics & Justice in West Africa : A dish best served by Lans Gberie

His writings are a combination of journalistic mastery and academic brilliance. The issues he articulate are well thought through and even when you don’t agree with him, you would not deny the fact that Lans Gberie ( Doc) does have the skills of making complex issues look like nursery rhymes best served to put toddlers to bed at night .
A man who has perfected the art of using his penmanship on pieces of papers or the modern skills of putting his well-manicured fingers on a computer keyboard, Lans’ latest piece of art ; ‘ War, Politics & Justice in West Africa’ ( Essays from 2003-2014) is a must read . Like a contagion, his previous book; ‘A Dirty War in West Africa: The RUF and the Destruction of Sierra Leone got me infected and when his latest came out , I knew it was the right antidote that I needed.
For me, War, Politics & Justice in West Africa is a stress-free reliever that got me cracking up intermittently all the way from Accra, Ghana to Abidjan, La Cote d ’voire onboard a propeller and reliably unreliable Air cote d’ Voire ‘tangains’ plane that had kept me hungry and angry after our flight was delayed for over four hours. The excuse? Flight crew members had previously arrived at Kotoka at 3:00 AM and needed at least eight hours of rest before they could return to the skies. (I will keep that story for later).
In the walls of the book which is covered by a picture of the Special Court for Sierra Leone building and Foday Sankoh, (the man Lans describes as “mysterious and nihilistic guerilla leader who was causing havoc in Sierra Leone including crudely amputating peasants’ limbs and laying waste to the countryside,” the author took his time to pick the embellishments from the facts that had been written by previous writers and or journalists. He did so like one would do picking lice from the head of an overcurious monkey. Like a google search engine on two feet, Lans carefully read the writings of Peter Schwab, Howard H French, Keith Richburg,Graham Greene ,Robert Kaplan and probably a dozen more and praised them where he thinks they have the passing grade of telling the African story and where they failed , he ‘ toffie e man dem .’
He was brutal like a teacher identifying plagiarized materials from a research paper and yet, he does so with an excellent mix of prose and beautiful poetry that you would want to read more.
War, Politics & Justice in West Africa is not only about the wars in Sierra Leone, Liberia or Ivory Coast or the shenanigans in neighboring Guinea or Benin or Nigeria but it also helps to provide me with a better insight the Yenga, the lumpen culture or touts he met on his way from Accra to Lagos, the banalities of a Gen Butt Naked who repeatedly told stories of how he killed 20, 000 people during the civil war in Liberia and the corruption-prone Immigration border posts we have traversing the sub region. On the latter, he said; “African borders are for the most part less places for customs or immigration regulation than for extortion and harassment of travelers and businesspeople by petty officials acting with impunity.”
I could go on and on but that would left Lans penniless because others would not bother to buy a copy again. For those looking for a simple book to read, this is for you. If you are a researcher on conflicts and the dynamics in the sub region and even the continent, this is your reference point and if you are a student of conflict resolution and peacebuilding, then you have no reason to be without Lans’ War, Politics & Justice in West Africa.

Appropriate textbook for middle school or low-level high school only

This is a good, well-written textbook with a lot of great illustrations and diagrams. However, the book is written on a very basic level, and only provides a very superficial coverage to current environmental science topics. I would not recommend this textbook for upper-level high school students. For teachers, this textbook also includes a resource CD with Powerpoints, tests, quizzes, and other worksheets.
