The Great Cheikh Anta Diop identified the roots of African culture from which one can trace the branches. No African researcher since, however, has provided a comprehensive analysis connecting the ancient Nile Valley civilizations with the African universe. From the pyramids of Egypt to the great walls of Zimbabwe, Western scholars have attributed the achievements of these prodigious indigenous African civilizations to people culturally and geographically alien to Africa. However, in the case of the ancient Nubian Empire of Kush, which occupied the southern part of Kemet (ancient Egypt) and all of present-day Sudan, one expects reasonable scholars to attribute this African culture to an African people. The present much-needed work traces Diop's great "African cultural commonalities" of matriarchy, totemism, divine kinship, and cosmology to the very core of Kushite culture. This book is on the cutting edge of a new generation of Afrocentric scholarship whose mandate it is to provide a clearer picture of Africa's true nature, it s genius and its genuine contribution to World Civilizations.

Miriam Ma'at-Ka-Re Monges is currently an assistant professor of Sociology/social work at California State University, Chico Campus. A founding member of the Institute of Africana Social Work at Temple University, she has also created and conducted a "rites-of-passage" program called "Candaces" for young African American women.

Not terribly helpful

I wish that this book did what it said - reconnected the root system of African civilization. This book is in the same vein as Cheik Anta Diop's African Origins of Civilization, but unfortunately she seems more interested in rehashing the same arguments and counters from the 1960s and '70s than she is in writing a concise, African-centered history of Kush and Nubia. I guess I'll have to keep looking...

Objective Afrocentricity vs Biased Eurocentricity!

Any objecive, unbiased and well argued book on African civilizations or history deserves a 5 star for me: the reason being simple, there are not many of such books in the world! Ms Monges has presented both sides of the argument (an art of arguing) and has logically and objectively rejoindered some of the eurocentric views and arguments very well. I have read 3 other books on Africa and Kemet (Egypt) and all share to a great extent the same well argued, objective and afrocentric view as potrayed by Ms Monges. I have always asked myself what do european anthropologists or so-called egyptologists mean by: 'negroid', but not 'negro'; to rephrase, black but not black enough? Indeed I have found several of the their arguments very irrational, absurd and illogical. Indeed Ms Monges does well to deal with most of the misconceptions surrounding Kemet, Kush and Africa. She seeks partly to adduce evidence for the Blackness of Egypt by comparing it to other cultural practices in modern Africa. Something which she does very well! Jesus said: there is nothing that is hidden that will not be revealed. Thank You Ms Monges for you objective Afrocentricity!

Rather Difficult for 6th Grader But an Accessible Discussion for High School and Up

This book was assigned to my advanced-reading 6th grader to use for an ELA project (the idea was to take a nonfiction book with text, and create a picture book based on it). Apparently, my son had been complaining that the other assignments were too easy (heh, hope this was a lesson learned in that regard).

Although the vocabulary and somewhat dry and academic style of this book presented some obstacles for him (for comparison, he has read The Lord of the Flies, Fahrenheit 451, and Cat's Cradle with no problem), he ultimately enjoyed reading it and especially liked digging through the bibliography for more information. This makes me extremely happy, especially since the subject matter is both afro-centric and female-centric. It frustrates me no end that in 2013 liberal arts education is still so focused on white, western males. Nothing wrong with them, just, the world is a rich and varied place, with more historical context than we know. It is a beautiful thing to learn. And this book presents what, for many students (and life-learners), will be new information and a new point of view, in a very accessible form.

I was gifted this product and I must say that I really enjoy using it with my two children. One is in K/1st and the other in 4th grade both home educated. We use this to initiate conversations. They like discussing the character traits, one by one and although we haven't done the totality of the book together yet I read through it. Best book on the subject I've read!

I've read a lot about financial math (I'm a physicist and love mathematics). This book is a gift. Just the tips (and code) on using Mathematica to process the data are worth the price alone. I don't buy into the Efficient Market Hypothesis and this book delivers (section 8.2) on fast markets. He correctly looks at the cash balance, something most folks gloss over, and sets up the various symbolic and numerical solutions in a useful way. The language is a bit terse and the structure drove me nuts until I got into the swing of the rhythm of the flow. I am grateful for the language now - we get a detailed look into the mind of someone who just plain KNOWS this subject. The fact you get the whole book as a series of Mathematica notebooks which are executible is a real plus. A few quick changes to the code and you have YOUR problem well on the way to solution. It is practical, explicitly direct, charmingly theoretical and powerfully presented. The only problem is I want a second volume and I want it NOW!

Tough book but very useful

This book is merciless; very complex, very dense. It is also, however, extremely useful. If Stojanovic were to publish ten more books on the topic, he would probably revolutionize the use of Mathematica in finance. The enclosed CD was also useful; such things are usually worthless but in this case, the book contains so much code that it would not be practical to implement without a digital copy.

The book is certainly a bargain at $70.

Its a tough read, but well worth it, most of the work is origional or is an origional take on what has been done before. A bit like what Hamilitonian mechanics is to Newtonian mechanics

Great book could not put it down

Great book could not put it down. This is the story of the authors flying career predominately in Papua New Guinea. The book is full of the authors flying stories written in a very Robert Mason (chickenhawk) style interspersed with humour that keeps it very enjoyable. The author has done his research there is some great history about the islands of PNG and the explorer types that have graced its shores. The analyses of a few of the aircraft accidents is also a reminder to the reader why this country has such a reputation. It brought back a lot of memories and laughs particularly the characters that were flying in PNG at the time. The book is very readable and anyone who has an interest in aviation or a bit of adventure will enjoy it.

Entertaining account of a pilot's journey from PNG to Asia.

As someone who to a large extent "copied" Matt's career 10 years later, and knowing a lot of the people mentioned, I found his colourful accounts very entertaining. His research filled in a lot of gaps in my knowledge of people and places and stories that I've heard over the years. I think this book will join others as an authoritative account of a certain time in PNG's aviation (and wider) history. I would recommend it especially to any aspiring young pilots, but also to some older pilots who need a refresher in the highs and lows of aviation. I would like to see the book in paperback one day.

About the Author
Laure Delcour, Senior Research Fellow, is at the Institut de Relations Internationales et Strat�giques, Paris, France and she is also with the French National School of Administration (ENA) 's centre of expertise on European Affairs. She has written and taught extensively at Sciences-Po Paris on the EU's policies in the post-Soviet area, including the European Neighbourhood Policy and EU-Russia relations. She has also been involved in a number of policy activities and consultancies on these topics for the European Commission, the European Parliament and the French Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Defence.

About the Author
Andy Lopez has been a head baseball coach since 1978, putting together an impressive string of winning ball clubs at three different levels. He began his career at Mira Costa High School in Manhattan Beach, California, where his team was a frequent participant in the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) playoffs. In 1982 his squad was runner up in the CIF finals played at Dodger Stadium.

Andy moved up to the NCAA Division II level the following year, becoming head coach at California State University at Dominguez Hills, in Carson. His teams clinched three conference championships and finished third place in the 1987 College World Series. In 1988 Andy stepped up to the NCAA Division I level when he was named head baseball coach at Pepperdine University in Malibu, California. Under his leadership, Pepperdine teams won four conference championships and captured the 1992 NCAA National Championship. Today, he is head baseball coach at the University of Florida in Gainesville, where he’s built a powerhouse and taken them all the way to the College World Series.

Andy has received numerous honors as coach of the year, including the 1992 NCAA Division I National Coach of the Year Award. He was inducted into the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) Athletic Hall of Fame in 1994. A graduate of UCLA, Andy is a member of the American Baseball Coaches Association and Fellowship of Christian Athletes. In his leisure time, he enjoys spending time with his family, reading, and jogging.

John Kirkgard’s unique perspective as both a longtime friend of Andy Lopez and a colleague in the coaching ranks brought special insights to this book. He helped Andy put his thoughts on paper and added his own expertise. A successful coach in his own right, John is an assistant baseball coach at the University of California at Santa Barbara. Previously, he managed the baseball team at Westmont College in Santa Barbara, California, where his teams won three Golden State Athletic Conference championships and one NAIA District 3 championship.

John is baseball chairman of the NAIA’s Far West Region. He was named NAIA Far West Region Coach of the Year in 1994 and NAIA District 3 Coach of the Year in 1988, 1989, and 1994. In 1986 he received an MBA from California Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks, California. A member of the American Baseball Coaches Association and Fellowship of Christian Athletes, John resides in Santa Barbara, California.

Get it and learn how to manage "a coach's life"

Coaching is like creating its own jigsaw : a lot of books will only show you how to shape a certain kind of pieces. This book will help you to define the entire picture and then refine it in many different pieces. It will provide you with datas that should be applied and confronted in real life, not only read and understood. Other coaching books usually give skills and drills. This fields are fast-covered here. Even if Andy Lopez has chosen to emphasize the development of a good pitching staff, his chapter gives insufficient direction, poor skills advices, no tools to evaluate pitchers progression... I don't recommend this book to players who are searching for new drills and new techniques. I recommend it to young coaches who doesn't know where they should be headed, and where they should bring their players.

Lopez covers more than most coaching books

Andy Lopez has written a book which not only covers drills and strategies, but discusses coaching philosophies, evaluating players, working with school administrators, fund-raising, game and practice preparation, and player motivation, among others, and he does it very well. In covering more than just on-field aspects he goes beyond all other coaching manuals I have read. He presents his ideas in an advanced way that makes them useful for high school and college coaches alike. As a high school baseball coach I've found Lopez's ideas to work very well when put into practice and I highly recommend this book to any prospective high school or college baseball coach

This A great book about more than just coaching baseball.

Lopez does an excellent job of explaining the complexities involved with coaching high-level baseball, that alone makes his book a success. What makes this book stand out is that he goes beyond coaching baseball, to coaching life. He talks about attitudes and ideas that will carry over from the field to the "real world" and that is what many high level coaching books leave out. The baseball instruction in this book is second to none. A must have for any serious coach.
