Charles Likes to Tell Stories

In this installment of the ValueTales series, Spencer Johnson helps us appreciate the imagination of Charles Dickens (1812-1870).

The book introduces Charles, a boy who loves to listen to his father tell stories. He decides that when he grows up he will be a great storyteller. Charles reads books to see how other people tell stories. He is encouraged by his imaginary friend, a talking bookworm. Charles had to work hard to help his family pay their debts. He remembered all of the hardship he saw, and when he was an adult he wrote stories about it. His stories entertained a lot of people--and convinced some of them to help people who didn't have enough money.

Like other books in the ValueTales series, this book uses a real-life person to exemplify an important value. It is suitable for reading by children in the later elementary school grades. A "Historical Facts" section at the book's end summarizes Dickens' life in a single-page bio form suitable for adults.

Closing quote: "Perhaps you may want to think about how you feel when you use your imagination. What you choose to do with your imagination may be very different from what Charles Dickens did with his. But whatever you decide to do with your imagination, let's hope it makes you happier. Just like it did for our good friend Charles Dickens." (p. 61-62)

Sad, Sad Stories

I am a loud and proud Gregg Olsen fan, but this book was a disappointment; It is not poorly written, but rather a compilation of several high profile crimes of recent history, including, but not limited to, the cases involving Mark Hacking, Josh Powell and Warren Jeff's. But all of these summaries could have been written by a talented High School student in an AP English class. It is completely devoid of any of Olsen's storytelling skills. In addition these stories are painfully sad, and as they are only summation of longer stories, there isn't even room at the end for updates of the survivors of the crimes, details that leave the reader often hopeful that although people have suffered, their suffering either led to new laws or policies that may save someone future pain, or knowing that survivors of crimes have risen above the worst experience of their lives and triumphed. Again, not poorly written but not much redeeming either.

Olsen didn't describe anything that I didn't already know from news reports. I doubt that I will buy any more Note USA books.

Fun Story of Future Conquest - Totally Worth $.99

I've got a deep amateur interest in the story of the Incas...particularly the story of the Spanish Conquest and downfall of the Incas. So the title of Turtledove's short story, "Vilcabamba" caught my eye.

Vilcabamba is Andean jungle hideaway of the last rules of the Inca nation who were holding out against Francisco Pizarro and his Conquistadors. Turtledove's story paints a parallel portrait of a future America overrun by aliens. Like the Incas, humans weren't completely obliterated as soon as the aliens arrived. They hid (sometimes in plain sight), and some chose to try and get along with their new rulers. They even led their own government in their isolated mountain fiefdom.

Turtledove's story follows a similar path. The President of the Free United States is trying to find ways to fight back against a vastly superior fighting force. There aren't many options beyond coordinated guerrilla tactics.

The story was fun...and at only about 20 pages long, Turtledove did a terrific job fleshing out a couple of key characters which would make for a strong start to a longer form work in this Universe. At only $.99, it's totally worth the download.

Light reading, enjoyable

I enjoyed this short story and found the concept engaging. It would be a good candidate for expansion into a full length novel. The idea of a remnant US government trying to maintain some semblance of the Republic in the face of alien conquerors is compelling.

easily overthrowing almost all human civilization in their quest for ...

An alien invasion story with parallel's to another alien invasion: the Spanish into South America, and the village of Vilcamba, which managed to survive far longer than the rest of the region. Actual aliens from space have invaded, easily overthrowing almost all human civilization in their quest for resources. Silver deposits have been found under American soil, and the President of the US and Canada must convince the invaders that destroying the land to get at these minerals will lead to such an annoying human rebellion as to make it not worth the while.

I find it fairly ironic that the lessons learned while conquering the land during East-to-West Imperialism could be used by said conquerors to battle the next invasion.

Overall, a good story. I'm not left wanting more, though, despite how this story could be expanded to a larger series, so I can't give it full stars.
