Amazing Life!

This is a wonderful autobiography by a woman who knows how to savor life. It explores her background from the days when she sought to become a professional ballerina, her beginnings in film, her journey into exotic lands that expanded her compassion for her fellow humans, and ultimately led to a spiritual transformation reflected in her later books.

As the author of a spiritually-themed novel entitled "The Misadventures of Sister Mary Olga Fortitude," I am always on the outlook for books that provide food for the soul. This one did it for me and it shall for you as well. You too can discover that you can have an amazing life. I have begun to experience a life beyond my wildest dreams. Shirley's books opened me to that possibility.

Prime Minister Lenny & Bhutan

My favorite story in this book is when Shirley visits the tiny country of Bhutan in 1964. She's thrilled and nervous when she's invited to meet Bhutan's prime minister, Llendhup Dorji. She expects an elderly holy man in saffron robes, sitting in a lotus position surrounded by an aura of sternness and spirituality. Suddenly, a handsome 28-year old Mongolian man dressed in tight black mohair pants, a bright red sports jacket and Italian shoes--with a cigarette hanging out of his mouth--swaggers into the room. He shakes her hand and says "Hi there, my name is Lenny!" Yes, Lenny was the acting Prime Minister of Bhutan in 1964 and according to Shirley, he was the hippest, coolest guy in the country. He asked HER about Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin, shared a drink with her and drove her around in his European sports car. Yet his conversation became poignant when he told Shirley he once hitchhiked across the United States and lived in Greenwich Village, where people assumed he was a Chinese laundryman. He said: "How do you explain Bhutan to Americans?" But Shirley's comments were even more thought-provoking. "I was thrown off completely. This Bhutanese chief of state had slept in Grand Central Station and people thought he was a Chinese laundryman? I guess it was no more incongruous than an American movie star who wanted to experiment with her inner self in the Himalayas." This is Shirley's first book, originally published in 1970, and it's one of her best. It will expand your horizons and your outlook on life.

A Remarkable Book............

When reading this book, one tends to find themselves imagining that the contents are based upon a wonderfully moving, humourous, exciting and particularly enlightening feature film starring the immensely talented and deep-thinking Shirley MacLaine. Instead, amazingly......... the book is autobiographical and therefore makes absolutely stunning reading. I have read many books by Shirley MacLaine and within all of them, there is a complete honesty which made me personally, look a little deeper into my own life. It's a gift.

Entertaining sci-fi that still stimulates brain cells

For those who like their science fiction relatively grounded and free of fleets of gleaming starships ferrying troops from one bloodied interplanetary battleground to another, then Lior Samson's �"Requisite Variety" is worth reading.

This set of stories largely explore the Earth-based computer and pharmaceutical revolutions and extrapolate their effects on humanity. Make no mistake: The anthology's theme is cautionary futurism. The humans in these stories often populate near or distant future realities that rely heavily upon advanced technology or states of mind. But, their burden of coming to grips with the level of dependence, or frankly addiction, isn't as consistently dreary or overbearing as George Orwell or Aldus Huxley. Samson instead generally employs Arthur C. Clarke's multi-cultural, globe-trotting style and adds a modern levity and sense of humor to many of the plots. This keeps the reader engaged and hopeful of some character transformation or enlightenment, if not always a happily ever after conclusion.

The anthology's best stories include the following:

Requisite Variety-- A futuristic tale set in Sydney, Australia, underemployed space pilot Barry grudgingly accepts a job as what seems like another cog in the wheel of one of the continent's ultra-mechanized skyscrapers. But Barry and co-worker Anya find their dormant skills and intelligence are useful after all when one day, things begin to go haywire. A nicely done, fairly suspenseful man vs. machine tale.

Not My Type-- A near futuristic tale that plays like a cautionary sitcom, with geeky computer programmer Alexi Danichov finally finding the woman of his dreams. Or are they of someone else's dreams? And is Alexi's dream girl �Khaddia Winslow all she seems? A humorous look at the effects of media marketing and the rise of microchips and cybernetic implant technology.

Sweet Success-- A postmodern look at the effects of pharmaceutical advancements and drug dependence, this is arguably the best story of the anthology. Independent Investigation Bureau agent Derek Scheinner's boredom is broken by an intriguing field assignment that puts him on the trail of a wildly popular chocolate chip cookie and its creator. The characters are colorful; the settings, richly-detailed; and the story briskly-paced, without compromising its deeper message. �

First Business-- A look at the concept of original sin from the view of virtual reality games, this somewhat disturbing story follows the desires of two off-work business executives, Nick and Phil. Are the holographic fantasies of "The Big Apple" all in their mind? Not nearly as many laughs as most of the other stories, but still an excellent job of characterization and imagery throughout that capture the degenerate underbelly of many big cities (made worse by accessiblity to the latest developments in technology and commerce).

"Requisite Variety" has many more such hits than it does misses. There are wholly alien and other-worldly tales to be had ("In Chapter Three Remember", "Dellahar's Father") and a few long short stories near the end. But, it is still a portrait of the artist as a young writer. Samson's attempts at espionage ("Digital Mole", "Conspiracy of the Silent") and dream state/stream-of-consciousness fiction ("Circular Logic", "The Occupant of Cell 2f") fall flat. But luckily, they're not the focus of the anthology--merely cerebral breathers perhaps from the greater speculative/sci-fi angle instead.

Overall, Lior Samson succeeds at delivering an entertaining and enlightening science and speculative fiction reading experience. While the laser blasts and body counts may be too low for some fans of the genre, there is ample intellectual action and adventure to stimulate the brain cells of discerning readers. Samson more often pits great characters in novel situations that twist and bend their minds to their limits, even breaking some of them into conformity. "Requisite Variety" is an excellent addition to any thinking person's library of science fiction and speculative fiction.

When Harville Hendrix writes about relationships, he discusses them not just as an educator and a therapist, but as a man who has himself been through a failed marriage. Hendrix felt the sting of his divorce intensely because he believed it signaled not only his failure as a husband but also his failure as a couples counselor. Investigating why his marriage dissolved led him to start looking into the psychology of love. Marriage, he ultimately discovered, is the "practice of becoming passionate friends."

As a result of his research, Hendrix created a therapy he calls Imago Relationship Therapy. In it, he combines what he's learned in a number of disciplines, including the behavioral sciences, depth psychology, cognitive therapy, and Gestalt therapy, to name just a few. He expounds upon this approach in Getting the Love You Want: A Guide for Couples. About the Author

HARVILLE HENDRIX, PH.D., has more than 30 years' experience as an educator and therapist. He specializes in working with couples in private practice, teaching marital therapy to therapists, and conducting couples workshops across the country. Dr. Hendrix is the founder/director of the IMAGO Institute for Relationship Therapy. He lives in New Jersey and New Mexico.

Must read for those in a relationship

I rarely write reviews but felt compelled to write one about this book. It was loaned to me by my therapist. My wife and I have been struggling in our marriage for years and no matter what I do (or she does), we always seem to fall back on the same old patterns of behavior that don't seem to work. Falling out of love has been a very painful experience indeed.
The situations described in the book were very, very recognizable to me and at times I felt it described it described me and my own feelings exactly. Read this book, even if it is just for the realization that you are not alone in your struggles to make something out of your marriage.
Nobody goes into marriage thinking they are going get divorced some day, but the statistics are grim. Roughly half of all marriages end up in divorce and of the remaining marriages probably 9 out of 10 couples sooner or later end up leading parallel lives where they try to find happiness and fulfillment outside of the relationship with their spouse. That means roughly only 1 in 20 couples end up building a lasting and fulfilling relationship that will last a lifetime. Are we expecting too much of marriage? Few of us would undertake an endeavor knowing there is only a 5% of succeeding, yet we do it anyway.
The book goes on to illustrate that we chose our partners for very specific reasons that few of us are even aware of. Out of thousands of potential partners we are attracted to some people that subconsciously meet very specific character and personality traits. In a sense, we all marry into our problems, the very things that attract us to our partners, become the very same issues that drive a wedge between us.
The book is very practical too in that offers specific exercises and guidelines for couples on how to interact with each other. But don't expect it to be easygoing by any means. I realize now that marriage takes a lot of hard work and commitment every day to make and stay successful. You have to make it a top priority in your life and take nothing for granted. Expect to do a lot of soul searching, be prepared to relive some gut wrenching and painful experiences from the past, be wiling to learn and undo the conditioned automated responses that you have always used, be prepared to be brutally honest to yourself and your spouse. I fear it might be too late for my own marriage but once you get through this catharsis, I do believe you might actually come out with a happier and more fulfilling relationship on the other end.

Narrow view of marriage and the unconscious; questionable assertions
By I really get it!
According to Hendrix, people choose partners that will help them resolve unmet needs from childhood. What if you resolve these childhood needs--then what, is it time for divorce? Hendrix maybe thought of this and has a section on pg 114 which states that childhood issues take a lifetime to resolve. So I guess he tries to cover himself on this question.

On pg 165 Hendrix states "Salvation is not an 'inside' job; it is the outcome of being nourished by others." Why does healing have to come from outside of yourself? It's a big assertion on his part to suggest that a person needs someone else to heal psychologically. Hendrix's main premise is that the purpose of marriage is to heal childhood needs, and that is why we choose the partner we do. It's a narrow view of marriage.

In the section "Til Death Do Us Part" on pg 114 Hendrix makes the case for a lifelong marriage commitment. Yet the author wrote the book with his second wife. Is this a case of 'do as I say, not as I do'? Maybe not a fair critique but the hypocrisy is plain.

Hendrix has some good ideas about improving communication with your partner. It is similar to the '5 Love Languages' in this regard. I'm not sure how valid his main idea is, of our partner being a mirror of our unconscious needs. He seems to have very simple views on marriage and why people choose their partners. His ideas on how the 'old brain' works as the source of our unconscious seem vastly oversimplified. It seems there is a lot of magical thinking going on with his theories.

easy, and if you want to learn to communicate ...

This book has saved our 5 year marriage. Period. Of course, it takes time and effort on our part to read it and do the exercises in it. It is clear, easy, and if you want to learn to communicate effectively whether you've been in relationship 1 year or over 30 years, get it and give yourselves the gift of giving - to each other. However, you always give to yourself first. We went to Rick Brown's workshop in Charleston, SC. He teaches the Imago work based on this book and does an admirable job of relaying the information, but I was really disappointed in the workshop because he would not take questions from participants during his presentation, and he only allowed two couples the whole weekend to work together in front of the group. Because we are motivated, we could have done just as well to get a room for a week, read the book to each other and practice the exercises. But there are other workshops around the country. Go for it - even if you are moving headlong toward divorce! Divorce is not the learning experience you really want! Let go of your pride and hurt and do THIS!

Su viaje se interrumpio al casarse con Roberto Suarez Gomez en 1958, a quien conocia desde muy joven en Santa Ana. Administro y gestiono los negocios ganaderos de su esposo durante veintitres anos, hasta su separacion, cuando confirmo la participacion de Roberto Suarez en negocios del narcotrafico. Actualmente vive en Santa Cruz de la Sierra, cerca de sus hijos y sus nietos.

Good starting book on twins

The book have some good basic advice. Good for first time parents expecting twins. I personally got a lot more out of When you are Expecting Twins, triplets, or Quads by Dr Barbara Luke and Tamara Eberlein, it has a lot more information on how to have a healthy multiple pregnancy and deliver healthy babies.
