Beautiful visual reference but it needs considerable revision

Since the eighties I don't remember any attempt to provide a comprehensive and complete visual guide of Roman military personnel and their enemies in one book. The WRG books gave a quick overview of the armies, battles and history providing dozens of simple line drawings. It was a great product for the time and many wargamers used it.

The author intelligently realized that there was no recent product to fill those needs; in thirty years there was nothing to substitute the very old WRG titles. Of course there are hundreds of titles which provide good illustrations, but nothing as comprehensive as the above mentioned books.

The production values of this book are of the highest standard with high quality pages, hard cover, very good coverage of all relevant time periods of roman history, and no big lacunas of Roman enemies or allies. The art work is truly amazing and congratulations are in order to Tom Croft, Simon Smith and Mathew Vince; obviously we must also commend the author which most probably provided valuable information and explanations to the artists. For that reason this book should be a must buy for modelers, wargamers, miniature painters, cinema and television art designers, etc.

Unfortunately this beautiful book has severe weaknesses that make it impossible for me to give the five stars that I believe a corrected and revised next edition will achieve. The mistakes in the text are indeed many and I will only mention a few illustrative examples.

- There are mistakes in naming places (like Vindobona that is refered as Vindabona in page 6 for example), persons, etc.;
- There are severe contradictions (like for example the hoplite formation sometimes being originally influenced by Etruscans others by Greeks (page 20/21); or the fact that in the text in page 34 Phillip the Arab was killed in action in 249, and exactly in the next sentence states that Decius is the first Roman emperor to be killed in action in 251);
- Photographs captions (the figures in the page 24 picture certainly doesn't show legionaries; the sashes mark them as officers, probably tribunes);
- Dates like the deeds of Agrippa (he died in 11BC it's impossible for him to have built anything in 25 AD) or the siege of Syracuse (it was fought between 214-212 BC, not 213-211 BC);
- Repeated mistakes like defending that there were 7 Etruscan kings in the Roman monarchical period, in fact according to tradition only 3 were Etruscans;
- Big, big mistakes like Carthaginian settlements in places like Madeira! I'm Portuguese and I can assure everyone that there is no Carthaginian settlement in Madeira. Probably the most ghastly mistake is where the author states that Sassanid's invade SPAIN in page 44! Confusing Caucasian Iberia with Hispania (today's Iberian Peninsula).

Those are just examples, there are many more. Although the illustrations are excellent they also have some flaws (I'm quite aware that it would be almost impossible to make hundreds of images without any mistakes). Here goes some needing correction: Sulla was blond; I'm not aware of any roman crossguard like the one portrayed in Constantine sword; the Vercingetorix image is the only illustration based on completely anachronistic material, it's clearly out of place (he probably wouldn't have such long hair, nor use La Tene bronze armor), the imaginifer of 2nd, 3rd cent on page 146 is carrying an imago of Julius Caesar which died in 44 BC, he should be using the imago of the current emperor).

This can become an iconic book for many target groups, but it needs a new revised edition; which I'm waiting expectantly so I can give a well deserved 5 stars to this project.

good overview

This is in overview of the Roman Empire and Byzantine Empire. It covers the Roman Republic, Roman Empire and Byzantine Empire and the enemies of the empire. It also includes ships and siege weapons. For more detail Greece and Rome at War is better, but if you want the Byzantine Empire this is right book. If you could have only 2 books on Roman uniforms get this book and Greece and Rome at War.

Excellent painting guide for this period in history. It would have been very useful when I was painting 25mm lead figures of this historical period. But, better a little later than never.

Resolved Will Change Your Perspective

Resolutions are easy to make. But the Christian life challenges our resolve to stay committed to God by testing our commitments against fear, rejection, and expectations.

Dr. Lina Abujamra has given us the blessing of another book, Resolved, written in her inimitable style and with her characteristic passion. Lina has seen life in all its raw reality—where it's from the perspective of an ER doc, a missionary, or a single who wrestles with the church's expectations of singles.

Lina tackles ten issues that demand our absolute resolve and offers "resolutions," much as Jonathan Edwards did centuries ago. These chapters urge us to adopt personal resolutions about our lives and believe, love, obey, yield, speak up, have joy, be in community, give, hope, and rest—all with Jesus Christ as a center.

My favorite quotes from Resolved:

"As followers of Jesus Christ, we believe a whole lot of crazy stuff. We believe in a Triune God. We believe in the virgin birth. We believe in the resurrection. We believe in the Holy Spirit. Dr. Lina AbuJamra is a godly woman who wants to see all of us become people who love and serve God with all our heart, mind, soul, and strength. She walks the walk and talks the talk; and through her book, Resolved, you will have the tools to do just that. She won't give younher opinions or today's New Age thinking, but what God's Word has to say. Will you be Resolved to stand firm in your faith?

Excellent Encouragement in the Face of Spiritual Struggle

I highly recommend this book. If you are in a dark season in your walk with God, this book will encourage and rebuild you. If you are in a season of great spiritual health, read this as a tool to recommend to others who might need encouragement, as well as to remind you as to why things are going so well for you right now.

I wanted to read this book because I got the impression from the subtitle and summary that it was going to encourage me in the face of spiritual persecution. That is not the focus of this book. The first chapter, Believe When it Looks Ridiculous, does address that aspect of being resolved in your faith. But the main focus of the book is to stand resolved when the challenge comes from within, when the temptation to forego your faith is because the sin within you or circumstances surrounding you lead you to doubt God’s promises, His power, and His presence. Despite being quite different in content and direction than I initially thought, I was very pleased and encouraged as I read this book. While Ms Abujamra writes in a very conversational style that is easy to read, Resolved is full of meaty truths and powerful Scripture references that build the believer up.

Resolved addresses 10 life situations that can make faith weak. They are: Believe When it Looks Ridiculous, Love when It’s Inconvenient, Obey When It’s not Popular, Yield When It’s my Right, Speak Up When It’s Easier Not To, Give When I Barely Have Enough, Be in Community When I’d Rather Be Alone, Have Joy When Life is Depressing, Hope When it Hurts Too Much, and Rest in the Midst of Chaos. Each chapter has many personal examples from Ms. Abujamra’s life, practical suggestions and approaches to aid the reader in putting the topic into practice in their life, and each ends with a formal resolution that the reader can make going forward.

I appreciated this book as I was in a dark season when I read it, and the final chapter on Rest in the Midst of Chaos was a great balm to my spirit. It is very encouraging to know we are not the only ones going through hard times, and Ms. Abujamra is very open and honest in her writing.

This nice little book by Grinstead, Peterson and Snell is devoted to four real world applications of probability theory. While the technical level is kept at a minimum, the authors focus on explaining how the real world problems can be translated into the language of probability and spend large parts of the text on motivating the models they use. This is done mostly by a large number of plots such that also readers with less mathematical background get a good feeling for the intuition behind the models . . . It was a great pleasure for me to read this book. In many parts, it reads almost like a novel but of course a very instructive one. At the same time, the text is a valuable source for any course on basic probability in giving a very detailed picture of how the theory can be used in real world applications. --H. M. Superb complement to a college course in Probability

If you take a college course in Probability and find it less relevant to interesting aspects of the real world than you had hoped, then I strongly recommend this book as the way to rekindle your interest. It has three long chapters (on streaks in sports and elsewhere; the stock market; lotteries) and a shorter chapter on fingerprints. All are interesting and well written, and the first two in particular examine in substantial detail how the math and the data are related. Are streaks longer than one would expect "just by chance"? To what extent do stock returns follow a Normal or a power law distribution? I urge instructors of college courses to suggest this book as supplementary reading, and I do so myself.

The book will pay for itself

I've read the entire book and implemented quite a few of the Hacks in my daily routine. Based on the amount of time I've already saved in just a few weeks, this book has easily paid for itself 2 or 3 times.

Some of the specific Hacks that I'm using and their results:

* Email Control - My Inbox is empty and I've finally got my email under control with filters and the 3-folders system created (I added a 4th folder - Print - for emails that I want a hard copy of but my laptop isn't connected to my printer)

* Digital Photos - I've got all my photos tagged and organized for fast searches

* Repetitive Typing - how did I ever get along without Texter???

* Google Calendar - I love using my mobile phone to update my calendar when I'm on the road or need to post a quick reminder that Calendar will email and text me.

I've still got a few things from the book on my To-Do List:

* Get my bookmarks moved over to del.icio.us as described in the book
* Setup my automated data backup to my external hard drive (I do it manually right now)

Gina's written a great book that really works. The book is platform independent and she tells you when something is Mac or Windows specific. She also lets you know the skill level (Easy, Medium, Advanced) that a Hack will require.

I enjoyed reading it and will probably go through it again soon to make sure I've implemented any hacks that can make my life easier - I'm sure I missed a few.

The second edition is just as good as the first...

I remember reading the first edition of Gina Trapani's Upgrade Your Life: The Lifehacker Guide to Working Smarter, Faster, Better and thinking how wonderful it was. Of course, when the second edition came out, I had to get that one too. And as with the first one, I have all sorts of post-it notes scattered throughout the book for reference and "go back and try this" notes. Well worth the time and money you spend here.

Control Your Email; Organize Your Data; Trick Yourself into Getting Done; Clear Your Mind; Firewall Your Attention; Streamline Common Tasks; Automate Repetitive Tasks; Get Your Data To Go; Master The Web; Hone Your Computer Survival Skills; Manage Multiple Computers; Index

Over the span of the chapters above, Trapani presents 116 different "hacks" that you can incorporate into your daily computer life to, well... work smarter, faster, and better. As with most books that are a compilation of different tips, some will resonate strongly with your current needs, while others are skimming material that may not be relevant. For instance, the hacks in the first chapter, Organize Your Data, hit home. I'm working towards consolidating multiple email addresses with Gmail, and I'm cutting down the number of folders I have, relying on search to find what I need. Master The Web also had some cool tricks, like having multiple home pages in Firefox and using Google Notebook for web clippings. I wasn't quite into the Managing Multiple Computers as much, as my current setup doesn't call for that. Still, it's good information to have around should you need it at a later time.

I actually found a couple different things occurring as I read through the material. There were hacks where some software was presented that did a certain task, and I'd realize I've been looking for something just like that. Similar to scratching an itch that you couldn't quite reach. Then there were the hacks that opened your eyes to whole areas you didn't even know you needed. Let's call that finding AND scratching the itch you didn't know you had five minutes prior. After going through some of the Automate Repetitive Tasks hacks, I have started to look at a lot of things I do with a view towards eliminating the manual repetitive effort that I just accepted as necessary before.

I highly recommend this book to everyone who spends most of their waking hours in front of a computer, and/or earn their living in front of one. Taking away even a small handful of nuggets can radically change the way you do things.

Great book for those wanting to be a bit more efficient

This is a collection of hints, tips and hacks for the technologically inclined. Areas covered are email, organizing your data, tricks to overcome your procrastination, clearing your mind, focusing your attention, streamlining common tasks, mastering the web, honing your computer survival skills and managing multiple computers.

Not at all ironically, the people for whom this book will be most useful - real geeks - will already know some, not all, of these things. I am most definitely a geek, but I did learn many new things and happy for that.

In some ways, the book will a half-loaf for many. There's a lot of Macintosh stuff that will not be helpful to Windows users and vice-versa. There's Windows Vista material that will not be useful to those (most of us, perhaps?) who are sticking with Windows XP. But this is not a major problem: the book has so much good stuff in it, that there is plenty for everyone.

Trapani's writing style is wonderfully clear, direct and concise.

Overall, other than calling it useful, versatile, eclectic and well-done, this book is difficult to classify. It merges real life (remembering to pick up the milk) with the technical (setting up a VPN) and lots, lots more. It is definitely a fun book to browse, packed with lots of great information.

A very worthwhile addition to your library.

Better than I thought it would be

This book is actually a lot better and more helpful than I anticipated.

It was advertised in the Charisma magazine newsletter a while back, and the book cover actually turned me off. The single red rose and key words in the title like "softer" and "woman of God" made me think of all the (twisted) traditional ways in which it would instruct me to, basically, diminish myself and not strive for my full potential in this world. It was such a turnoff, yet something counterintuitive was telling me to purchase it. I'd never bought a product advertised in an email newsletter before. So I told myself that if I was going to guffaw and ridicule a book, I should at least take a look at it first. But really, I'm pretty sure it was God telling me to buy it.

I was wrong about the book's aim and content. I was surprised to find out that it actually is a basic guide to success for women in the workplace or in church ministry situations. I can see now why the book cover and title are the way that they are: It's aimed at women who have been conditioned to think that negotiation, standing up for yourself, speaking up, and setting personal and professional boundaries are mannish behaviors. If it had been titled 'How to Get What You Want and Deserve," those women would probably not pick it up.

So women who struggle with these particular issues and curiosities will find help with this book. It does a good job of convincing that audience that these practices are essential to success in any life pursuit, if one wishes to be effective, organized and respected by others.

Scumaci also does a great job getting across that one can still be a lady while acquiring these traits, but she doesn't do so by reinforcing to her audience that these traits are somehow innately male. She empowers her audience to understand that what they have to offer is valuable, and she teaches them how to project that value so others can see it better, too.

Speaking of projecting, that's pretty much what I was doing when I initially saw the book cover and title -- assuming this was just another one of the evangelical Christian books I've run across that uses our faith to convince women that the path to success is found in the shadows of a support role and staying quiet. I'm glad to admit that I was wrong.

Very Disappointing

Very scarce on explanations. As others have mentioned, it's not enough to say "do something" without going into some detail of what you are doing and why. Also, I think the authors devoted way too many pages on things like cataloging, printing, making photo books, etc. and not nearly enough on how to actually manipulate photos, and what pages they did devote to the topic are short on explanation. And I am very surprised that they did not even go into how to fix portraits, one of the biggest uses of Lightroom. The book seems to be more of a showcase for other photographers' work, without any real relevance to the lessons within. I'll take the return postage hit and return this book as it is very disappointing.

Begineer to Intermediate textbook level for Photographers and others who need to edit photos

As a photographer, I know Photoshop like the back of my hand, but was never formally taught Lightroom. I like John Evans books as he is very detailed, easy to understand, lots of diagrams and photos, well-explained, not a beginners book but not for the seriously advanced either. For those like me who had some knowledge of the product, although you could learn the program from zero knowledge with this book, but if you know the program and are looking for some thing more advanced, This is an intermediate level text book.

I like the way the CIB series walks you through the ...

I like the way the CIB series walks you through the lessons step by step. Some of the exercises, like sending a picture out of LR by email can have problems unrelated to the book, but dependent on your mail system. Also, had some problems with the exercise on sharing LR images with my Android phone, again this could be somewhat related to my phone.
I think the book is expensive, but in the absence of anything better, the step by step instructions are very good and work well.
