Review
"This book made me nervous when I first scanned through it because I knew it would work! This isn't a self-help book; it's more of a blue-collar, get-down-to-business friend with calloused hands who is ready to boogie when you are. This book is about action, but also acknowledgment. There are no platitudes and its author is no Pollyanna. It's an explicit map that leads to a place where you're going to feel measurably better, and better equipped to face life's vicissitudes."
— Rob Delaney, comedian

"This book does the work that I believe is most worthwhile – it does not hand you answers, it sets you up to find them yourself. One of the most accessible, relatable, unique and flawlessly crafted books that I have ever seen. A must have, a must read, a must do."
— Brianna Wiest, author of The Human Element

"Taking the small incremental steps toward conquering depression takes courage, and even then, it helps to have any compassionate guidance you can find. How To Be Happy (Or At Least Less Sad) comes from a knowing, forgiving place. Its intentions are sincere. When I first read it I thought: I could have used a book like this. And then I thought: I still can use a book like this."
— Jason Porter, author of Why Are You So Sad?

"This book (How To Be Happy) is the kind of friend I want around when I'm feeling sad. He lets me vent without judging me, gives me a little guidance, reminds me that I'm not alone, and lets me draw all over him with colored pencils."
— Lisa Currie, author of The Scribble Diary and Me, You, Us

“Whether you are just having a random sad day, or whether your bad days come a little bit more frequently than that, Lee’s book will help you shine a new light on your life. Filled with thoughtful, simple and heart-opening exercises, plus snippets and stories from the author’s own struggles, this book will give you a new lens that will help you get through the rough patches, week-by-week, day-by-day or minute-by-minute if that’s all you can handle.Fill out these pages. You’ll laugh. You’ll cry. And you’ll be blown away by what you discover about your own ability to feel happy. Or at least less sad.”
— Bernadette Noll, author of Slow Family Living

“A breath of fresh air...This is a wonderful tool for anyone struggling with depression—or even just feeling blah.”
--Publishers Weekly

A Great Tool to Encourage Mindfulness
By Travelsinheels
I purchased this book when I saw a review for it online and found the premise interesting. As someone who has ongoing struggles with anxiety and depression, I'm always up to try something new that might help. The book itself is basically an exercise book that allows you to move through at your own pace and fosters mindfulness which is something I think most of us toss aside when life gets busy or difficult. I've had some more clinical workbooks in the past and I think I actually prefer this less formal, more inviting format. One night as I was filling out one of the first exercises, my husband looked over and asked what I was doing. I told him I was listing 10 things that I do everyday that don't cause me pleasure and then crossing out the ones that are not essential. That ended up sparking a great conversation between the two of us that lasted quite a while and we both identified small things we could each change that would really have a positive impact on our day to day happiness.

Even though I am using this as a tool to work through my mental health challenges, I think this book is a great option for anyone who feels in a rut or just wants to do a little soul searching. I'm looking forward to what other tools I'll discover in this little gem.

Practical, nonjudgmental, encouraging, accessible
By R Froe
When I bought this book, I was in such a down mental state that I was pinning quite a bit of hope on its subtitle being possible. Now that I am looking back with clearer eyes, I see why this book is helpful. It gives you permission to identify your negative thoughts but steers you away from ruminating. It's a low risk high reward method of examining your thoughts and feelings. Doing basically any exercise on a page, regardless of its focus, tends to make me feel better in the moment. They are extremely practical exercises. Some of the exercises are just generally relaxing (like filling 50 squares with as many squares of gray as you can), others are more directive (like writing your most frequent intrusive thoughts, then identifying how they are distorted thinking). A lot of the advice and exercises seem to be simplified versions of methods used in mindfulness therapy and CBT. The way that it is introduced is non-threatening and fun.

Personally, I don't actually write in this book but copy my prompts into a different notebook. That way I can reuse this book or lend it out to a friend who might need it.

Another book which I would recommend buying in conjunction with this one is "Start Where You Are", which is apparently quite popular on Amazon. I feel that the content of these books goes hand in hand. Many of the exercises are similar in themes. However, that book is filled with cheery colors and lots of inspirational quotations; this book is inked in black and white, and might be better for someone who is depressed while stepping into self-examination with a journal for the first time.

I recommend going slow and keeping an open mind if you choose to order it. I feel grateful for this book right now.

Songwriters On Songwriting, by Paul Zollo

In these fifty-two interviews, the greatest songwriters of our time go straight to the source of the magic of songwriting by offering their thoughts, feelings, and opinions on their art. Representing almost every genre of popular music, from folk to Tin Pan Alley to jazz, from blues to pop rock, these are the figures who have shaped American music as we know it. Here they share their secrets and personal methods for converting inspiration into song: Robbie Robertson of the Band an Tom Petty talk about working with Bob Dylan; Dylan himself, in his only in-depth interview in more than ten years, says that the world doesn’t need any new songs; R.E.M. name their favorite R.E.M. songs; Madonna describes collaborating with Prince; Sammy Cahn talks about writing standards for Sinatra; Pete Seeger recounts hitting the road with Woody Guthrie; Frank Zappa admits to loving ”Louie Louie”; Todd Rundgren explains how he dreams his songs; and, in the book’s most extensive interview, Paul Simon delves into his opus from ”The Sound of Silence” to ”Graceland.” And almost all of them express delight at being able to talk about the mechanics of music itself, something that they have rarely been asked to discuss. Here expanded with new interviews with Burt Bacharach, Laura Nyro, Yoko Ono, Leonard Cohen, Graham Nash, Jackson Browne, Richard Thompson, and many others, Songwriters on Songwriting is a rare volume: one of the best books on the craft of musicmaking, an informative source for musicians and songwriters, and an invaluable historical record of the popular music of this century.

This book is absolutely amazing if you wish to take a break from all the technicalities of producing great music and wish to focus more on actually writing great songs. I ordered mine from Doggy Doo Books here amazon and their service was just outstanding when it came to my package getting lost and they promptly sent me another one. I don't know if i was speaking with the owner of that establishment but it was extremely pleasant talking to him about my issue and very professional.

A Must Read For Songwriters!
By Amazon Customer
If you are in the business this should be a must read - especially if you are a songwriter. It is important to know about American music history and American songwriters. The book covers pretty much everyone who has been anyone (or worked with others who are no longer here to tell their story) in the songwriting world. Not only are the stories interesting how certain standards were written but also you will find great advice to help you in your songwriting career.

Amazon.com Review
Take one French food authority and author, one Italian food authority and author, give them a subject like bread and a publisher like Britain's Dorling Kindersley, and the result can't help but be one of the more engaging books on bread and bread baking. DK Publishing is of the seeing-is-believing school of cookbooks, and this philosophy works particularly well in their Ultimate Bread. The opening plates of the world of bread are enough in and of themselves to drive anyone--beginner or expert baker--right into the kitchen.

The "Baking Essentials" section shows and explains the differences in various kinds of flour, wheat and nonwheat, as well as the basic ingredients (yeast, oil, eggs, salt--not a long list) and tools. The "Basic Techniques" section shows you exactly what dough should look like in the various stages of bread production. The photos are so thick with color you can almost touch and smell the dough.

But the majority of the book is dedicated to recipes. Here you will find Country Oatmeal Bread, French Baguettes, Pretzels, Ciabatta, Pain aux Noix, Brioche, Nan, Pita, Corn Bread, and Challah. There are dozens of breads in all, from the very basic to the festive. And finally, there's even a section devoted to problem solving--although the biggest problem you may have is deciding which recipe to start with. --Schuyler Ingle

From Library Journal
Combine DK's gorgeous visuals with two authors skilled in the art of breadmaking, and you have the perfect book for anyone who has ever been afraid to try baking bread. Treuille, who coauthored Le Cordon Bleu Complete Cooking Techniques (Murdoch, 1997), and Ferrigno, whose last cookbook was Pizza, Pasta, and Polenta (Merehurst, 1995), begin with fundamentals such as essential ingredients and equipment before turning to basic techniques such as kneading and using a starter. Recipes for more than 100 different kinds of breads, including quick, flat, and festive breads, are offered. Each recipe has clear, precise step-by-step instructions with both metric and nonmetric measurements and time estimates. While there is no shortage of bread books to choose from, including The Book of Bread (LJ 1/97), which focuses solely on the history of bread, Ultimate Bread is an essential choice for all public libraries and any academic library with an interest in the baking arts.?John Charles, Scottsdale P.L., AZ

The recipes from this book "call out" to you....
By hpybaker@mail.megsinet.net
I loved this book. The pictures are enticing, and the detailed instructions will enable even the most inept baker to produce beautiful and tasty loaves of bread, fromt he very plain to the very festive. It gave me the courage to try making Sourdough from scratch, including the starter. I've been making sourdough every 2-3 days ever since! I would like to caution novice bread bakers that the cooking temps for most of the breads are 425 to 475 degrees, and I was not able to do that in my over or the loaves would burn on the bottom. I baked mine at the traditonal 350 degrees for a longer cooking time and they came out great!

A READER correction.
By H. Juarez
"Page 144 the "Pain D' Epice" French Honey Spice Bread, 1 loaf. Calls for 1 1/2 cups honey, 1 1/3 cups milk, 2 eggs, spices AND 1/2 cup of flour."

Actually, page 144 calls for 3/4 cup plus two table spoons of whole-wheat flour AND 3/4 cup plus two tablespoons of rye flour.

I have baked this twice and it always comes out perfect.

turn on the oven, is baking time!
By M. S.
This is an amazing book. It is so complete and detailed.
My previous experiences in bread baking were with betty crocker. I liked the recipes but I wanted to go a step further. With so many books about baking bread, it was a hard choice but I decided on this one because I saw that it was filled with pictures. I'm so glad that I chose this 'cause it is indeed a great book. The recipes are incredible and the techniques also.
The book starts with a "gallery of breads", beautiful pictures of french, english, italian, european and middle eastern breads.
Then it shows different types of flours (with more pictures), then the techniques step by step on how to prepare the yeast, how to make a starter, mixing, kneading, shaping and baking. Photos of different kinds of glazing and toppings follow this chapter. Then the recipes. I think I've tried every recipe that is in this book. Not one of them turned out bad. They were espectacular. Outside and inside.
I cannot recommend this book enough.

The Dip, by Seth Godin

A New York Times, USA Today, and Wall Street Journal bestseller

In this iconic bestseller, popular business blogger and bestselling author Seth Godin proves that winners are really just the best quitters. Godin shows that winners quit fast, quit often, and quit without guilt—until they commit to beating the right Dip.

Every new project (or job, or hobby, or company) starts out fun…then gets really hard, and not much fun at all. You might be in a Dip—a temporary setback that will get better if you keep pushing. But maybe it’s really a Cul-de-Sac—a total dead end. What really sets superstars apart is the ability to tell the two apart.

Winners seek out the Dip. They realize that the bigger the barrier, the bigger the reward for getting past it. If you can beat the Dip to be the best, you’ll earn profits, glory, and long-term security.
Whether you’re an intern or a CEO, this fun little book will help you figure out if you’re in a Dip that’s worthy of your time, effort, and talents. The old saying is wrong—winners do quit, and quitters do win.

From Publishers Weekly
Yet another easily digestible social marketplace commentary from the blogger/author who penned Purple Cow and Small is the New Big, Godin prescribes a cleverly counter-intuitive way to approach one's potential for success. Smart, honest, and refreshingly free of self-help posturing, this primer on winning-through-quitting is at once motivational and comically indifferent, making the lofty goal of "becoming the best in the world" an achievable proposition-all you need is to "start doing some quitting." The secret to "strategic quitting" is seeking, understanding and embracing "the Dip," "the long slog between starting and mastery" in which those without the determination or will find themselves burning out. As such, Godin demonstrates how to identify and quit your "Cul-de-Sac" and "Cliff" situations, in which no amount of work will lead to success. Godin provides tips for finding your Dip, taking advantage of it and becoming one of the few (inevitably valuable) players to emerge on the other side; he also provides guidelines for quitting with confidence. Quick, hilarious and happily irreverent, Godin's truth-that "we fail when we get distracted by tasks we don't have the guts to quit"-makes excellent sense of an often-difficult career move.

Time for a dip?
By A. Maurer
A short read, but a very powerful read. Anything by Seth Godin has always turned out to be a treasure and in some aspect a life changer for me. I recently read another of his books The Dip which really gave a me a lot to think about. As always, I have purchased almost every single Seth Godin book and they are books that will never be discarded because they are the few books I read over and over.

Seth Godin takes on the topic of quitting and places the whole idea into a whole new perspective. There is always talk about failure and quitting on social media and in particular education. This book challenges many of the common ideas often discussed. Here are some of the key ideas that stood out to me in no particular order that will hopefully inspire you to read the book for yourself and provide some ideas for you to think about.

1. Never quitting is bad advice. Right from the start he argues one of the most common ideas quoted time and time again. He says that the quote from Vince Lombardi, “Quitters never win and winners never quit.” is bad advice. Instead he claims that winners “quit all the time. They just quit the right stuff at the right time.”

2. Zipf’s Law – This law is mentioned in the book so I had to look it up on wikipedia. I am instantly fascinated by this concept where we basically love winners. Not just winners, but the whole idea that frequency is key. When something wins it usually wins big. Think about the popular records, box office, tv shows, books, etc. The top of the top sell more than anyone else. You could be 2nd or third, but end up way behind. Now that I aware of this law I start to notice it time and time again.

3. Well Rounded is Bad Advice – Anytime education is challenged my ears perk up. Seth states, “Just about everything you learned in school about life is wrong, but the wrongest thing might very well be this: Being well rounded is the secret to success.” I have to agree 100%. I shared this graphic a few posts back and also here specifically about this topic so reading this book after further cemented my beliefs.

Who are You-

4. The Cul-De-Sac

I love this thought. I really do. And I think it is the state of education. Basically it means a “situation where you work and you work and nothing much changes. It doesn’t get a lot better, it doesn’t get a lot worse. It just is.” Not only is this happening in education, but it happens in our own personal lives. This idea seems so simple and yet I keep going back to it. I think it goes much deeper once you move past the surface of simply a definition. Sometimes we have to get on the highway….(my new idea developing from this neighborhood metaphor)

5. I think that the reason many live in a cul-de-sac is because it is easy to be mediocre. It is easy to blend in. Quitting is hard because you must admit that you are not number one. This is tough for many of us. We don’t like to admit these type of things so we will continue to do things just so we are not quitters. Our society has pushed our thinking to believe that quitting is bad.

6. The key to quitting is understanding The Dip. We must learn when to quit. We don’t want to quit at the wrong time. We have to realize that the systems in place want us to quit. They operate on us quitting. If we can push past the dip and not quit, then we hit the results of being number one. We breakthrough and hit new levels of success that cannot we believe we can achieve. What is the dip? Well, read the book!

7. The one idea that makes sense, but I struggle with agreeing with is if we are going to quit we must quit before we start. If we cannot be the best in the world he suggests we don’t even try. I don’t know how I feel about that. I think we have to shoot for the stars sometimes. Perhaps I must define what it means to be the best in the world. Does this mean I must be an Olympian in running? No, I think he is going after something much grander in concept, but it is important to at least think about the message. When thinking about quitting we have to think about…….

8. Two Choices – Don’t be average. If you find yourself being average you must make a decision. Either you quit or be exceptional. “Average is for losers”. This is a tough pill to swallow, but a necessary one. I think about my life and things that I want to fix. If I quit the things that are just average in my life due to average work and commitment I could really push some elements to be exceptional by freeing up time and energy spent on doing things average in my life in the cul-de-sac. This idea is one that has hit home with me and is really forcing me to think through things deeply.

Those are just a few ideas that really stood out to me when I finished the book. I have many more passages highlighted, but if I shared everything then what would be the point to read the book? This book packs a lot in 80 pages, but that is what Seth Godin does.

If you are interested in his other books here are the others I have read and recommend.

My favorite book of his so far. I have read this one many times! Tribes: We Need You to Lead Us by Seth Godin http://amzn.to/1IxiiLK

Oh man, this one is so good also! Purple Cow by Seth Godin http://amzn.to/1IxilYa

Common Sense
By Robert W. Kellemen
The sub-title says it all, in fact, for some, that may be all you need to read: when to quit and when to stick. That's Godin's simple message.

Some may find it profound--the truth that some people quit too soon while others don't quit when they should. Given that we are all always told never to quit and that we are guilting into thinking that a quitter is a loser, the message is an important one for people easily swayed by common advice.

"The Dip" is not a how-to book. If you read it hoping to know how to determine the difference between quitting too soon or too late, you'll likely be frustrated. If you read it hoping to determine whether your dip is a dead end or a short cut, you'll likely be frustrated.

"The Dip" is a motivational book that encourages readers to think long term before making the decision to quit or endure. It makes sense--common sense. For the business person lacking common sense--this is a helpful book. But then again, the business person lacking common sense likely needs a lot of help.

Reviewer: Bob Kellemen, Ph.D., is the author of "Beyond the Suffering," "Soul Physicians," and "Spiritual Friends."

Clever, witty, thought provoking, and in the end just plain food reading.
By Ernane
Read this book at one sitting. It reads effortlessly, is light, witty, entertaining, funny and quite profound. It challenges conventional wisdom about quitting by introducing you to the Dip. The Dip is something we all know, but may lack the courage to admit to ourselves, but if we do, the rewards for pushing through it can be game changers ( or rather life changers). Curious choices for certain examples, like that for Senseo (so few people know about it in the US, but guess that's why he chose it, right?). Additionally, found enlightening his comments and comparisons on Google and Microsoft. Two very different, but nonetheless effective ways of getting through the Dip. All in all, delightful, fun, and highly recommended

This book is great!
By RB
I have done refrigeration for over 30 years and some HVAC in the 80's. I needed some information on current systems and this book did it. Textbooks are for theory, and if you understand how something works it is easier to repair. Another reviewer claimed it didn't tell you how to repair something like change a motor etc. Those kind of things are in equipment manuals. By the way this book actually had the wiring diagram for a smart valve, not something you would usually find in a textbook. No textbook can replace hands on learning but you have to have a good foundation which this book provides. If you think you can read a book and become a master service technician, I would like to see how big that book would be (This book is 1650 pages). As for Nate certification you should get a dedicated Nate Study guide in what you are interested in such as Dewalt HVAC technician certification exam guide.

Read the two and three-star reviews to see what is wrong with this book. This text book is the one used by most colleges that teach air conditioning and refrigeration. It was written 40 years ago. It has been up-dated haphazardly. Some new chapters have been added, along with new pictures, but it is basically still a book that was written 40 years ago.

This book will not teach you how to repair an air conditioner. It does not give step-by-step instructions how to perform any repair job. It does not give you an orderly method to troubleshoot and diagnose air conditioning and refrigeration systems. It does not provide flow-charts. If you master this tomb, don't expect to be able to actually service any air conditioning system, pass NATE certification, or ICE certification. It will not teach you how to change a fan motor, how to replace a compressor, or how to read a schematic.

It will not tell you what a Mitsubishi flare is or how to make one. It incorrectly states you can't place a saddle valve on the high-side of a charged system.

It does not tell you what you should do if you come across an a/c system that is leaking water. It does not tell you how to unclog a blocked condensate drain. It does not tell you what you should do if you come across a system with a frozen evaporator. This book will not tell you how to balance air flow in an a/c system, nor does it teach you how to perform or calculate Manual A, B, C, E, F, G, H, I, J, etc.

You will not find answers to most of the questions in the book. Those answers are in a guide sold or given to course instructors. The companion lab book is useless without the guide for the companion lab book that is only available to instructors.

This book will not teach you how to braze, bend tubing, make flairs, or cut tubing. It does not teach you when and where you can use low temperature solder. It doesn't teach when you can use a turbo torch instead of an oxy-acetylene torch.

The book is very hard to read even if you know the material. The material presented is a mishmash, disjointed, and disorganized.

This book will not teach you how refrigerant to add to charge a commercial a/c system, nor will it teach how much refrigerant to add to charge a commercial refrigeration system. It is vague on how to charge a residential system. It does describe what pressures and temperatures you would expect to see if you were looking at a brand new system.

This book does not tell you how to pump a system down, or which systems you can safely pump down without destroying them. This book does not teach you how to pressure clean coils or straighten coils.

This book does not teach you how to use a recovery unit to recover system refrigerant.

The book does contain a great deal of utterly useless information. I don't know a single a/c tech that actually uses psychrometrics in a/c repair.

No one reads this book cover to cover.

The book gives incorrect pressures for oxy-acetylene torches. Most a/c techs use the wrong pressures because of this book. It does not teach you how to how to choose a tip. Nor does it do a good job explaining how to obtain the right flame. It doesn't explain the advantages of low-temperature soldering or the disadvantages of brazing.

It doesn't teach you how to remove the cores in schrader valves, how to rethread schrader valves, how to extract a broken schrader valve.

It does not teach you how to size a contactor or a starter.

You will not find anywhere inside it, half the components used in commercial air conditioning.

The book tells you how to dress, how to behave, how to talk to customers, if you need that kind of information. Every other page, it tells you to be courteous.

It doesn't teach you how to troubleshoot or repair commercial or domestic refrigeration units or systems. What it does do is describe a few components found commercial and domestic refrigeration systems. Very few.

A system shuts down due to a high pressure switch cut-out. What should techs check? You won't find the answer in this book.

The book describes the operation of a king valve, but doesn't tell you where you where you are likely to see such a valve. It doesn't describe the operation of the most common access valves found on most a/c systems.

What if there is not enough room to attach your gauges to the service ports? What are low-loss fittings? What is the purpose of a JB DV-29, and how to use it? Why is it important to change vacuum pump oil before and after every use?

Why is it wrong to use superheat at the condensing unit or subcooling at the air handler to charge a system?

How do you size ducts?

What happens to fan blower amp draw if ducts are too small or too large?

How do you treat a system that has water inside it from a hurricane or a broken water-cooled condenser?

A 20a circuit breaker should carry how many amps? At what amperage should it trip?

What size electric strip heater do you add to an a/c system?

None of these questions are answered.

Some books tell you to wind low-voltage wire ten-times around the jaws of an amprobe then divide your reading by 10. This is mickey mouse. I don't know how many techs have time to do this. Do yourself a favor and buy an amprobe that reads low amps to check low-voltage, low-amp circuits.

What should delta T be for condenser water in a swimming pool heat pump? What should the evap. and condenser pressures be? What should the subcooling and superheat be? How do you find superheat and subcooling info on a system? None of these questions are answered.

What are the symptoms of a heat-pump check valve failing? What do you if a heat pump does not properly defrost?
What kind of symptoms can a defective defrost circuit board produce?

How do you troubleshoot an ECM motor? How many different kinds of ECM motors are there? You will not find these questions answered here.

It teaches you words, concepts, and theory no tech ever needs to know. I am an a/c contractor and an instructor.

Here are two books I do recommend. Michael Prokup's "Air conditioning Service Guide." This book is sold by Johnstone Supplies. And "Guide to NATE/ICE Certification Exams"

I will be publishing my own book later this year.

Excellent Textbook

This book touches on all aspects of the HVACR (Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration) profession. The material can be on the dry side and some sections are more informative than others, but overall its a comprehensive book for anybody interested in learning about how to do this.

Amazon.com Review
Q&A with Po Bronson and Ashley Merryman

Q. Are you refuting the concept that it takes ten years of practice to get great at anything?

Po Bronson: Not at all, we feel our book is additive to that story. Nobody is judged on how they practice. They're judged on how they perform when it counts. Practicing is not the same as competing. You can pitch a million baseballs to your son until he perfects his swing--but wait until he faces a pitcher who wants him to miss. You might have ten years of experience in the advertising industry, but how do you handle the day your biggest client tells you they're leaving for a rival agency?

Ashley Merryman: The truth is, nobody puts in ten years before they start competing. The world doesn't work that way. We are all thrown into competitive situations, long before we've had enough practice. Our results are still judged; our fate is still determined by how we do. To survive these trials, we need more than practice. We need competitive fire.

Q. Did researching this book change how you each compete?

Ashley Merryman: I'm a girl. All my life, I've been told to "play nice." I heard it on the playground and then the grown-up version they say in boardrooms: women are better at coalition-building, not competing. The science says that's wrong. And it's not just about toughening up. Women are prone to weigh risks more carefully than men; when women are confident they have a good chance to succeed, they'll compete. Sometimes this is an asset (in certain domains), but sometimes it's a hindrance. I've learned to recognize when to tap into my gender's knack for risk-analysis, and when to ignore it.

Po Bronson: I didn't let many people know it, but before working on this book, I'd had a full-hip replacement and a few unsuccessful surgeries on my leg. I had many setbacks during rehab; I could barely walk at times. This affected every dimension of my life--it sapped my energy for my writing work and my volunteer projects. I was just losing my edge and my will to fight. Researching the book inspired me; it reminded me who I am. It restored my zeal for attacking big challenges. I hope the book does that for readers, first and foremost: gets them eager to surmount the challenges in their lives.

Q. Everyone says that companies must innovate to remain competitive--but does it work the other way around? Doesn't competition destroy creativity?

Po Bronson: There is a belief that creative genius is fragile and needs to be shielded from competition and comparison. But the research says that's a myth. Leonardo da Vinci loved to have his art put side by side with the work of others for debate over whose was best; Bach, too, liked to compete against other musicians in public concerts. Chemical fire extinguishers, food canning, transcontinental air travel--each began as the prize winner of a competition. Competition doesn't kill creativity: it facilitates creative output by supplying motivational drive.

Ashley Merryman: Whether professional musicians or school children, studies have shown competition fuels creativity and even improves the quality of the work produced. More than that, the skills that make you a great competitor--such as a willingness to push boundaries, trust one's instincts, problem-solve--those are the same skills needed for innovation.

From Booklist
Bronson and Merryman follow up the best-selling NurtureShock (2009) with this intriguing look at the nature of competition. Most of us are taught from an early age that it’s good to be competitive, but we’re not usually taught how to compete. Sure, we can learn how to play a sport, and we can practice the skills, but practicing is not the same as competing. You can perfect your baseball swing in practice, but how do you react when you’re facing a pitcher who wants you to miss? The key element of competition, the authors say, is the ability to compete under pressure in situations that are not under one’s own control. Using plenty of real-world examples, from Olympic athletes to fighter pilots to intelligence operatives, the authors persuasively argue that technical skill is only one part—in many cases, the least important part—of what it takes to come out on top. Expect lots of talk-show play for this one. --David Pitt

Now I know why playing not to lose typically means you do
By D. M. Kemp
I grabbed this book thinking it might give me some insight into the people that I manage. More specifically, I wanted to learn about teams, team dynamics, and what differentiated winning teams from losers. Instead I got a book very much focused on the individual. Why do we compete. How much anxiety does it create to compete and how do different people handle it.

The nice thing about the authors is they are basing their book off of countless scientific studies. You don't get a lot of trite statements or colloquialisms. The authors are good at taking the evidence of these studies and creating a compelling story.

In the end, I learned several things about the differences between men and women in terms of competition, anxiety levels in competitors, playing not to lose, etc. I just wish there was more coverage on teams and the inner dynamics of winning teams.

Well written. Well researched. A good solid read.

Great read, but lacks advice
By Jenny
Very well written and a joy to read. As someone who has to often synthesize scientific evidence for my job as a researcher what the authors have accomplished is no small feat. I only wish there was more research presented on how to teach children how to be good at competing like assessing when to compete and when not to, how to handle losing, how to handle the physiologic stress of entering into competition....etc. I disagree with one section where the authors conclude, after telling the story of how 5% of top coders win 80% of the prize money, that competition is inherently good and fun. Well it's only good and fun for that 5%.

Fascinating, But Not So Practical
By Book Fanatic
This is a very interesting book and an easy read for those of us who like to understand human behavior and psychology. It is filled with often counter-intuitive information about why competitiveness is actually good. There are some broad ideas that can be gleaned for parents, teachers, and managers about various things that might improve performance, but it is really not a guide for individuals. When you have finished this book, you won't have a list of things to do to improve your chances of good performance, but you will have an idea about the kinds of things that matter. So this is a thoughtful book for thoughtful people. Hopefully others will be prompted to provide more practical advice for people to follow.

Having said all this, I still easily recommend this book for people who are curious about what makes people perform well.
