A good book for students who do not like maths

It is a good book with clear illustration of the statistics. It begin with simple statistics and then move on to more difficult analysis. Before I get this book, whenever I pick up a book about statistics, I feel fate. Then I close it immediately after reading 1 to 2 pages, and never pick it up again. However, for this particular book, I've read more than half (about 300 pages)and still want to finish it. After you've read one page, you are eager to read another and another. So, I highly recommend this book to undergradaute and postgraduate students.

About the Author
Ben Rothschild is a chess teacher. He is a chess expert, according to the rankings of the United States Chess Federation. At age 16, he was ranked 17th in the nation for his age. In 2006, his high school's chess team Niles North won the Illinois High School Association team chess state championships. The Illinois General Assembly honored them with a resolution passed in the House. In 2008, Niles North placed third at the High School Chess Nationals. Ben can play blindfold and calculate ten moves ahead. He has defeated multiple chess masters in tournaments. He is the founder of the nonprofit organization Chess Kings which offers after school classes, private lessons, and chess camps. He is also the author of over two hundred free chess instruction videos on YouTube. He has a Bachelor's Degree in History from the University of Illinois at Urbana. Creative, instructive, and quirky

I've worked in a few great tactics and puzzle books for beginners… I HIGHLY recommend this book as an all-encompassing guide to starting the game from square one. I've showed it to all my friends who are starting out.

This is not just pictures of a chess board, pick the best move (although it has those too); the book breaks down the game to the most fundamental patterns and themes, such as piece values and trading, checkmating, and how different pieces can get around the board. The exercises are creative and they work the patterns into your brain.

Highly recommended for those who want to have a fun introduction to the game. Also, there's rhymes :) Favorite section: getting good at knight moves.

good for beginners

I'm not a very good chess player but this book was very easy for me to understand. Each lesson is a picture of a chess board with pieces arranged in very particular ways. You learn to play chess by - wait for it - playing chess. I now understand a little bit more about the strategy behind moves, scoring, and some other stuff relevant to chess that i didn't know existed. I would recommend this book to anyone who doesn't know how to play chess but wants to learn.

Needs Rethinking Before New Edition

I'm using this text for teaching zoology at a small liberal arts college. My PhD is in wildlife and population genetics. Three main complaints thus far, and the semester just started: 1) The writing lacks clarity. For scientists, I'm surprised the writing is as obtuse as it is. 2) This is a zoology text, so why are almost all of the examples used in the chapters on genetics and reproduction focused on humans? Students will have already covered those topics ad naseum in the biology courses they took as prerequisites to this course. There are plenty of existing non-human animal examples, I suggest the authors integrate them into future editions. 3) In Chapter 6, when discussing polymorphism, the authors talk only of using allozymes---ALLOZYMES---for studying population genetics. Then just to make sure you noticed how out-of-touch they were with modern genetics, they share a table from Hedrick's work in 1984. We haven't got to the chapters devoted to phyla yet, so I may update this review.

In this groundbreaking interdisciplinary work, Frederick Turner presents a new theory of aesthetics based on the argument that beauty is an objective reality in the universe. He identifies the experience of beauty as a pancultural, neurobiological phenomenon. Drawing on recent work in a wide range of fields--ritual and dramatic performance, the oral tradition, paleoanthropology and human evolution, neurobiology, cosmology and theoretic physics, chaos theory and fractal mathematics--the book describes evolution as a self-organizing, emergent process that generates increasingly advanced forms of self-reflection, and proposes that the experience of beauty is the recognition of this evolutionary process and the reward for participating in it. The experience of aesthetic beauty, Turner says, is an adaptive function that drives evolution through sexual selection. Those individuals most sensitive to beauty survived surface cultural changes, excelled in mating rituals, and were participants in the positive evolution of the species. Turner shows how, as a result, neurotransmitters in the brain respond to certain inherited systems by which we appreciate beauty. Turner also presents the implications for theories of art and literature that follow from his identification of the inherent genres of human aesthetic experience. Forms of art cannot be arbitrary but must be rooted in our biological inheritance. This calls into question theories about modern art, and suggests that modernist culture turned its back on beauty in an attempt to repress and avoid the shame of humanness and our biological nature. Beauty's beast

I imagine readers will be wandering toward this intriguing book by way of some very different roots. Some, although not I, may be drawn to the implicit neo-political message in its subtitle, "The Value of Values." Perhaps having read your William Bennett you seek a more austere, academically flavored approach to moral absolutism. I don't think you'll find it here, but I wouldn't be surprised if the complexity (or is it ambiguity) of Turner's message didn't allow ideologues of the moralist right to snatch up this book to wave in the other free hand.
I came to this book after having discovered a very unusual book-length work of epic poetry. A rare enough form in itself these days, but this epic takes the further genre-bending leap of representing its story in the future, as "sci-fi." The epic poem is "The New World" and, as you might have surmised, the author is Frederick Turner. I guess it figures. Consider the readership problem. An epic poem may capture about 10% of the already small poetry-reading cohort, then one has to slice away another 90% of that often rather snooty crew as disdaining the sci-fi genre. A writer would have to have some sort of "big idea" fuel to drive such a thankless and relatively readerless endeavor. Turner has (many) such ideas!
Turner believes there are cross-cultural, cross-temporal universals, one of which is that which he shamelessly calls "beauty." You might note your own reaction to that title (or the thought of reading the book openly on a bus ? better a Danielle Steele). In choosing the more vernacular term, Turner purposely steps around the academic doo-doo that has become "aesthetics" while pursuing a rather academic task - defining beauty and bolstering the claim for absolutes in the process.
I'm not sure if he succeeds.
One intriguing link he makes, drawn rather extensively, is that between beauty and shame - notice another word one rarely sees in discussions outside the psych department. Beauty, he suggests, lies at a boundary between the dark and the light - shame energizes that interface for humans, fueling a historically tumultuous dynamic.
Casting a sidereal light on recent events he suggests:
"We can tell ideological pity from true pity by the killing.
Once the killing starts, another feedback mechanism springs into being; our shame at our crimes is denied, and transformed into further hatred, which must be slaked by further crime... This is the essential mechanism of the phenomenon of Terror."
Wow... "where's did beauty go?", you might ask. Well I can only say that the power of Turner's argument probably stems from his walking the sharp edge between dark and light and that one chosen quote represents the style and the energy of his approach if not its breadth.
Turner's discussion, I must add, are not a-political. He is certainly aware of the political content that lies within a head-on challenge to "modernism" and relativism. He also goes ahead and steps into the busy and dangerous highway of intellectual discourse by claiming that the development of the notion of left-right political dichotomy itself is at the core of the shames which have driven our culture away from the beautiful. Once again, the Bennett-ites will leap in to place a heavy hand around Turner's shoulders, but I think he would shrug it off. (Not being a student of cultural history I wonder that this 1991 book must already have had its reaction within intellectual circles and for all I know Turner is co-authoring books about what your 2nd grader needs to know... don't think so, though).
He is careful to develop the notion that his idea of beauty-lost is not necessarily a toga-party; not just a revival of a Greco-Roman canonical corpse. His references, such as they are, are smattered with non-western elements which build a broader base for that-which-is-lost than Bennett and the gang.
But its in the references department that I found the book wanting. As a lengthy essay it is very thought-provoking. But Turner suggests throughout that his notion of the "absolute" part of the argument is built upon recent discoveries about human brains and consciousness. Perhaps it is - but he drops nary a single footnote or reference (or even a slender bibliography) for the inquiring mind; and thus leaves, in the end, a certain doubt about the grounding of his ideas. If, like me, you have rooted some of your own thinking and reading about human existence around writers like Daniel Dennett (or even Morris Berman), you will feel cheated knowing that such scientific grounding doubtless exists and could have been bundled into this bouquet.
Ah well, you can't have everything (or five stars). This is an intriguing book.

Great Book..Can't wait to read the next one!

This story was even better than Daughter of the Read Dawn!
We are greeted by many old "friends" and meet some new ones on this new adventure. The story was a bit more emotional in feel than Daughter of the Red Dawn was. Here we not only have our found princess, but 3 small orphans she cares for as well.
The under currents of this story are sad, but there's plenty of moments that will make the reader smile, a few that will make the reader sad, and a couple that will make the reader angry.
Eranna is at it again, this time her target is the Dwarf city under the boarder of Mollac. Jocelyn, the younger daughter of Mollac gains some invaluable allies including our Damu princess friend Eladria and her husband Titus. Rothatin's attitude takes on some strange twists in this one that will surprise the reader. But nothing will surprise the reader more than Jocelyn's story which is splashed through the entire book with a twist so drastic the reader will be slack jawed for awhile.
This is a great installment to this series, and I truly look forward to the third installment which if I'm not mistaken is where we'll meet our underwater princess from the Kingdom of Zenun.

Jocylene's prophecy is here.... Jocelyn surpases everyones expectations (Audio)

I have no idea why I kept putting the reading of this series off, I even went out & brought the books after reading book 1 the first time.

What can I say about 'Child of the Sacred Earth'???.... hmmm well I'm kinda kicking myself from not reading it earlier as Alicia has done an amazing job continuing on her "The Lost Kingdom of Fallada" series. Please if you haven't read the prequel 'Beyond the Iron Gate' or book 1 'Daughter of the Red Dawn', do so immediately. The prequel gives you an amazingly beautiful story & more indepth history of Fallada & book 1 is the start of the prophecy.

Jocylene is a sophomore in college, her life revolves around finishing her degree, getting a good job & legally getting her foster siblings away from their evil foster mother. Jocylene has known she is different from an early age & has practiced her powers for years. Then a boy she goes to college with attacks her, then attacks her home... but things are not what they seem to Jocylene, leaving Earth for Fallada with her foster siblings in tow, her life changes for ever.

Alicia has weaved a compelling, enthralling tale, it had me at the prologue & gripped me until the last line of the epilogue. I love how each book in the series is another piece of the prophecy, each princess has her own book. The Kingdom of Fallada is described so vividly, so are all the characters... it takes me into the books completely when I'm reading. Bring on book 3, I can't wait to read it!

Q- What did you love best about Child of the Sacred Earth?
A- I'm going to say I loved the whole book, but my absolute best thing is that Jocelyn is a strong character, she shines throughout.
Q- Who was your favorite character and why?
A- This is a hard one... I have a few...
Adrah- she is so understanding & supportive of everyone, she's kind & cares about ALL the people in her care.
Jocelyn- I love her as a character, especially when she put's her foster siblings needs above her own.
Selena & Titas- absolutely loving how far they've come as a couple.
Rothatin- I can't wait to see what kind of growth he goes through, which started in Daughter of the Red Dawn, but is continuing still.
I'm sure I will have more to add to this list in the coming books of the series.
Q- What about Kristina Klemetti’s performance did you like?
A- I loved Kristina Klemetti's accent's for all the characters within the book, I think she added more depth to everything happening within the book. I can't remember if when reading the book, if I cried or not... but I can honestly say the emotions hit me hard whilst listening to this.
Q- If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
A- I'm really bad at these taglines....
"You know the saying 'Never judge a book by it's cover'?? the same could be said about Jocelyn"
Q- Any additional comments?
A- I absolutely LOVED everything about this narration, I'm hoping that Alicia Michaels has Kristina continue narrating for the entire series.

Great book in a great series

Jocylene Sanders is NOT your typical coming of age college student as we've seen in many YA series (over and over again), she was bounced around various foster homes for most of her life but when she came of age she couldn't bear the thought of leaving the younger children in her current foster home in the care of the less-than-ideal (to say the least) foster mother. So she made a deal with her to stay there while she attended college in exchange for taking care of the younger kids (which she was doing anyway) and cleaning the house.

Her unique ability, she always kept to herself. She wasn't really sure where it came from or what it meant, she only knew that she had the ability to "affect" the earth around her in a unique way. Even though she would never tell anyone about, she still stole a few moments alone in the woods occasionally to revel in it. Until the wolves found her and tracked her back to her home.

Fortunately, the wolves were not the only ones searching for her. Rothatin Longspear is on a mission from the Queen of the Faeries herself to track down and find the next lost princess of Fallada who is a key to the salvation of both Man and Fae-kind alike. Rothatin arrives just in time to see Jocylene kick some serious shape-shifter butt (wait a minute - wasn't Rothatin supposed to be the hero?)

Without giving away any more of the book, lets just say that the 2nd lost princess is found and you will be taken on ride completely unlike any you've experienced. It will leave you craving the next book in the series. There are seven princess in all so you know that this is going to be a long series (which is a major PLUS of course!)

Definitely Recommend!
