About the Author
Jeffrey Jensen Arnett is a Research Professor in the Department of Psychology at Clark University in Worcester, Massachusetts. He received his Ph.D. in developmental psychology in 1986 from the University of Virginia, and did three years of postdoctoral work at the University of Chicago. From 1992-1998 he was Associate Professor in the Department of Human Development and Family Studies at the University of Missouri where he taught a 300-student lifespan development course every semester. From 1998-2005 he was a Visiting Associate Professor in the Department of Human Development at the University of Maryland. In the fall of 2005 he was a Fulbright Scholar at the University of Copenhagen in Denmark.
His primary scholarly interest for the past 10 years has been in emerging adulthood. He coined the term, and has conducted research on emerging adults concerning a wide variety of topics, including risk behavior (especially cigarette smoking) and media use (especially music), involving several different ethnic groups in American society. He is the editor of the "Journal of Adolescent Research," and is on the Editorial Board of four other journals. He was Editor-In-Chief for two encyclopedias published in 2007, the "International Encyclopedia of Adolescence" (Routledge, two volumes) and the "Encyclopedia of Children, Adolescents, and the Media "(Sage, two volumes). He has published many theoretical and research papers on emerging adulthood in peer-reviewed journals, as well as the books "Adolescence and Emerging Adulthood: A Cultural Approach" (2010, 4th edition, Pearson); "Emerging Adulthood: The Winding Road from the Late Teens Through the Twenties" (2004, Oxford University Press); and "Metalheads: Heavy Metal Music and Adolescent Alienation "(1996, Westview Press). He has also edited (with Jennifer Tanner) the book "Emerging Adults in America: Coming of Age in the 21st Century," published in 2006 by APA Books.

This Version is a waste of money

The version of this textbook is digital, however, you have to be connected to the internet in order to access it. Also, you only have access to it for a year. You are better off purchasing the a la carte version that comes with a looseleaf text. I paid $90 for something I never used and you couldn't return it since you have to open it.

Insightful and interesting!

Arnett wrote this whole textbook and included pictures of his own children throughout. The book ventures into different theories of human development, and splits up life into different developmental stages. It starts with conception and ends with the afterlife. I loved the chapter on emerging adulthood (ages 18-25). It is written for Millenials, those who are currently in between high school and a career, but still don't feel like adults.

A serious reference

I use this book as a refresher/reference for my work. The content is complete and up to my expectations. The text is sometime a little "rough" but overall easy to follow and well organize so it is easy to find the right information. This book is now part of the few that I consider indispensable.

A good book

I am an engineer and I came across Greenberg's book after I graduated and pursued postgraduate studies. I wasn't satisfied with the depth mathematics were covered during my studies, in the sense that when I bumped into a math problem, (say differential equations) the only connection to it was the solution that was obtained by reffering to an ODE book; the solution or any hint to the solution did not come natural. I believe this is a common problem with engineers; if a great depth is pursued in every subject the engineer deals with (physics, chemistry, materials, statistics, etc.) he/she will never graduate!

I had purchased or found in the library other books on advanced mathematics, but they were either too mathematical (symbolic), meaning you had to study 100 pages to get a result you needed, or too practical, written in a cookbook manner, i.e. good as a manual but not good in providing the essence of the subject.

So I caught myself reading and borrowing Greenberg's book many times from the library (by the way this is the best way to choose which book to buy among many options). This led me to buy it.

Sorry for the lengthy "autobiography", but this was to clarify my "point" in my point of view, so that my "view" can be put to the appropriate frame.

I surely haven't regret buying Greenberg's book. The book proceeds to a satisfactory depth (from the engineer's point of view), it provides proofs to many theorems, it is lucid, explanatory, ideal for self study, and presents not only practical results, but also explains clearly essential mathematical concepts, which means that it stimulates the readers interest in mathematics. The examples given and the exercises are related to engineering concepts wherever this is possible.

The following quote pretty much summarizes Greenberg's approach to the subject. Quoting p.152: "[...] we are by no means dealing only with the solving of equations but with the phenomena thereby being described [...] we do need to solve the equations that model the phenomena [...] but we also need to study, interpret and understand the results"

In short the book gives the necessary amount of information found in other engineering mathematics books (however it doesn't cover statistics, graph theory and optimization). The best feature is that it also instigates the mathematical intuition of the reader, thereby uniting concepts and providing a motivation for further and deeper study of mathematics. In the latter case Courant's "Introduction to Calculus and Analysis" is highly recommended.

There are excercises in every subsection; others are for mere practice and others are more challenging/theoretical. Not all are provided with a hint/answer though.

Don't buy the book if you are looking for:
1. a step by step book to do the logistics, such as Stroud's book
2. a math book in the format this is the theory -----(missing links)----> these are the results (to me this is Kreyszig's book).

Highly recommended

PS. Why do many people comment on the colour of the book? The book gets the message across without it. The world is full of colours but it has me puzzled many times and the colour hasn't helped figuring things out (although it does make it more enjoyable).

Few realize it but an obscure little Balkan country which had recently gained its independence from the Ottoman Empire, played a profound role in the development of the Mauser rifle. Serbia's purchase of the Model 1871 rifle came just in time to save the Mauser company from bankruptcy. It became the Serbian Model 1880. Among other innovations for which Serbian designers were responsible was the famous "ring-of-steel" which provided complete support for the cartridge base, and which was introduced into the Gew.M1898 rifle in 1905. Serbia, later renamed Yugoslavia, also helped develop the "intermediate-ring" Mauser action. Yugoslav Mausers — Models 1924, Model 24/47 and Model 1948 — are prized collectors items. Mr. Bogdanovic's book is the first in English to provide a complete discussion of these, and every other "Yugoslav" Mauser rifle from 1880 to the present, including all sniper rifles, hunting and target rifles and .22 sporting rifles. In Serbian and Yugoslav Mauser Rifles, each model is discussed in its own chapter. All serial numbers are presented by year. All markings are presented and translated and all finishes and changes to all models a described in text and charts and well illustrated with both photographs and excellent drawings for clarity. These are the rifles that proved so deadly to the Nazi occupiers in World War II in the hands of the famous Yugoslav "partisans."

About the Author
Branko Bogdanovic is a well-known firearms author and has written several books on firearms as well as dozens of magazine articles. He is also a writer and researcher for the Zastava Arms Factory in Kragujevac, Serbia. He is also a member of the Advisory Board of the National Military Museum, Belgrade, Serbia and researcher and writer for the Ministry of the Interior.

Great Book!

I have always been partial to Mausers, but always associated that rifle with Germany, not Serbia and Yugoslavia. In fact, I turned up my nose when I first started seeing what appeared to be Mauser rifles with Yugoslav, or Serbian markings.

Being a bottom feeder, however, I got a great price on a Model 48 A Mauser (a Kragujevac) at a gun show. The rifle was well made and shot as well as any of my German Mausers. The most frustrating thing about my Model 48 A was the dearth of information available about it and the assortment of interesting markings it carries. I also learned that Partisan ammunition from Serbia is some of the best 8 mm ammunition available.

Branko Bogdanovic filled that void admirably with SERBIAN AND YUGOSLAV MAUSER RIFLES, one of the FOR COLLECTORS ONLY series by North Cape Publications. The book, however, goes beyond the usual format of this series with some of the best illustrations and photographs I have ever seen. Gordana Totic is credited with the illustrations and Branka Milosavljevic with the translation, under the editorial oversight of Dr. Charles H. Cureton of the US Army's famous Training and Doctrine Command.

This was truly an international effort and the result shows it. Author Bogdanovic is associated with the historic Zastava Arms Factory at Kragujevic as well as with Serbia's Special Anti-Terrorist Unit.

His book includes a wealth of information about the Serbian/Yugoslav Mausers and about the obscure, fascinating details of the history of that important part of the world. Not only do we learn about the woods selected for stocking, and re-stocking, Mausers, we learn what Chetniks were.

The book is enhanced by useful tables, a glossary, an excellent bibliography and some great notes on gunmarks you're likely to find on your Serbian/Yugoslav Mauser. All the illustrations are black and white, except for the cover and the book lacked an index.

In fact, that is the only criticism I could make against this otherwise excellent book. It would be easier to use for quick reference if it had a good index. Hopefully, this will be included on future editions.

If you are interested in Mausers, the Balkans, Serbia, Yugoslavia or military history involving that region, you will enjoy this book. I certainly did and I gave it five stars.

A lot of accurate reference information without the gloss

"Serbian and Yugoslav Mauser Rifles" is one of the titles from North Cape Publications' "For Collectors Only Series" and, like the other titles in this series, information regarding these specific types of firearms is very complete, including: production tables, identifying markings, model specifications and historical context. Pictures and illustrations are basic black and white, photos are historical, all are of a high enough quality to serve their purpose. I was easily able to identify the origins and general history of a Yugo 1924/47 I recently purchased.

The book begins with the first Serbian produced firearm in 1832 and wraps up with the Model 1993 50 BMG Black Arrow Sniper ifle, however the concentration is as the title implies, Serbian Mausers. There is also as encapsulated history of Serbia - Yugoslavia in the context of wars and government. I grew up with the work "Yugoslavia" and Serbia was not something that was a part of my geographic vocabulary, so in this respect the book was helpful in more broad terms. It is an interesting historical work, it is accurate and an excellent research resource and well worth the money to anyone who owns or is contemplating buying one of the firearms of this origin.

The contents of this book originates from 35 years of teaching Steam Generators to graduate students at the Politecnico of Milan, Italy and from 45 years of professional activity in this area. This book has been written for practising designers, users, and engineers of steam generators in order to guide them through practical problems and help avoiding technical mistakes. Also the academic scientists and university students who are interested in problems of power generation can find useful information.

The first part of the book presents the different types of generators which are installed either in industrial plants like power plants. In particular boilers for energy of regenerative sources are included. Information about the optimized solutions, the energetic saving, and the mistakes to be avoided is given to the designer. In the second section both, the thermodynamic calculation and the fluid dynamics are developed according to rigorous scientific criteria. In this section, the author presents several of his original studies. Finally, optimizing criteria are illustrated and computer calculations are shown according to the calculation criteria that are indicated in the book.
An appendix includes an in-depth analysis of a few topics discussed in previous chapters and a study about finned tubes.

A director at MIT's Sloan School, Senge here proposes the "systems thinking" method to help a corporation to become a "learning organization," one that integrates at all personnel levels indifferently related company functions (sales, product design, etc.) to "expand the ability to produce." He describes requisite disciplines, of which systems-thinking is the fifth. Others include "personal mastery" of one's capacities and "team learning" through group discussion of individual objectives and problems. Employees and managers are also encouraged to examine together their often negative perceptions or "mental models" of company people and procedures. The text is esoteric and flavored with terms like "recontextualized rationality," but the book should help inventory-addled retailers whom the author cites as unaware of their customers' desire for quality. If You Liked The Fifth Discipline, You'll Love This Book

I had read The Fifth Discipline, and liked the book very much. I knew about the Fieldbook, but found its bulk to be intimidating. Then, Goren Carstedt gave me a copy, and asked me to read it. Although the book invites the reader to skip around, I am a front to back reader. I decided to read it while walking on the treadmill daily. My exercise regimen started to improve because I enjoyed reading this book in 45 minute segments so much. You should probably do the same. Also, if you can skip around, that is better. What I found is that there is a helpful exercise or two for implementing every key idea in The Fifth Discipline. This added much more meaning to that book for me, and also helped me identify and solve some problems that I had been thinking about. I strongly urge you to get this book, read it, and read it again. Be sure to do the exercises that intrigue you, because they will help you to a much better understanding of your business. If you just want help with systems thinking, there is a section of about a 100 pages that you could read in a few hours that would help you very much.

Understand the systems around you, and create lasting change

Nothing happens in isolation, every event or situation is the result of numerous related events. In order to create lasting change in a work environment, in your personal life, or in your physical health, there are numerous interrelated factors that contribute to the current situation.
Within this book you will discover how your actions create your current reality, and why certain actions may or may not bring about the desired change. The book identifies "systems archetypes" such as the snowball effect, balancing loops, growth and under investment, fixes that fail, limits to growth, shifting the burden and others. These are general models that describe many familiar scenarios and situations.
Along the way, the book details:
Personal mastery - a commitment to personal growth and learning
Mental Models - The beliefs that people hold about the world, change, and reality that may be impeding the change process or limiting growth.
Shared Vision - Overcoming mental models and bringing concerns and beliefs out in to the open, so members of an organization may work toward a common goal.
Team learning - Building on shared vision, by aligning goals, dreams and desires, in a manner such that a group of people function as a whole to achieve a common goal.
There are numerous easy to understand examples of the five disciplines at work in the book, that anyone can relate to and understand. They range from corporate examples such as the ultimate failure of Peoples Express airlines, a simple supply chain management scenario in the "Beer Game" and numerous examples from everyday life.
It's an easy reading book, very thought provoking, and enlightening, definitely worth picking up a copy. The Fifth Discipline Fieldbook, and the Dance of Change provide excellent complimentary reading to the 5th Discipline, and are full of exercises relating to the Fifth Discipline. In addition, Eli Goldratt has written several books that compliment this work very well particularly the Goal.

Even More Relevant and More Valuable Now

This is the first of three Senge books I greatly admire, the others being The Fifth Discipline Fieldbook and The Dance of Change. It is important to keep in mind that "total learning" is a misnomer. We can never learn everything it is possible to learn (are you fluent in Mandarin Chinese?) nor can we ever learn all of the possible applications of what we do know. Senge's objective is to help all organizations (regardless of nature or size) to optimize opportunities for appropriate learning, and, to assist everyone involved to optimize the results of their efforts to learn. What several other reviewers have either ignored or minimized is Senge's substantial contribution to our understanding of effective, sustainable change within any organizational structure. (You are also urged to check out O'Toole's Leading Change, another excellent source of information and counsel.) Senge organizes The Fifth Discipline as follows:
Part I How our Actions Create Our Reality...and How We Can Change It
Part II The Fifth Discipline: The Cornerstone of the Learning Organization
Part III The Core Disciplines: Building the Learning Organization
Part IV Prototypes
Part V Coda
According to Senge, there are five new "component technologies" which are gradually converging to innovate learning organizations: Systems Thinking ("invisible fabrics of interrelated actions"), Personal Mastery (of various skills at the highest possible level), Mental Models ("deeply engrained assumptions, generalizations, or even pictures or images" which influence learning), Building Shared Vision (of "a set of principles and guiding practices" which help to define "pictures of the future"), and finally Team Learning (based on dialogue which enables effective collaboration). The book examines each of these five separate but interdependent "disciplines" with meticulous care and compelling eloquence.
Organizations as well as those who comprise them can (and often do) have learning disabilities. For example, what I call the Negative Self-Fulfilling Prophecy: "I can't do "it" or "We can't do "it." The prophecy is then fulfilled (of course) as if it had been expressed by the Oracle at Delphi. Senge is well-aware of learning disabilities. Within the framework of his narrative, he suggests a number of practical strategies and tactics to overcome them. In effect, Senge has created a highly-readable, immensely practical, and extraordinarily comprehensive examination of "The Art & Practice of the Learning Organization."
Although first published ten years ago, The Fifth Discipline is more relevant and more valuable today than ever before. Why? Because change is the only constant and it can occur in seconds rather than in years or even days. Because there is now so much more information to absorb, digest, and evaluate. Because organizations are (finally) beginning to recognize their under-utilization of their "human capital" and need immediate assistance. I give The Fifth Discipline the highest possible rating and conclude my review of it by quoting Derek Bok's response when parents of Harvard students complained about a tuition increase: "If you think education is expensive, try ignorance."
Those who share my high regard for this book are encouraged to read William Isaacs' Dialogue, also. Senge provides an excellent Introduction to it.

Ron Roy paints a coulourful picture of mystery & suspense about 3 friends who go to a dude ranch and discover that someone steals the gold nugget they found. They spend the week panning for gold, chasing down clues and narrowing down the suspects, all guests at the dude ranch.

The story is interesting, but the plot was not all that believable, as it is unlikely that three 8-year-olds could catch a world-renown thief. Although this book is written for a slightly younger reader, mystery stories are always fun and enjoyable. I give this book 4 stars out of 5, because it was a bit slow to start off, but as the story developed, I found myself sitting on the edge of my seat, waiting to find out what would happen next

A real instruction book for believers on A.A. history, Bible roots, and Bible study

A while ago I wrote a brief review of this book. Then I spotted a review which talked about "tolerance" but never even seemed to mention this book or its contents. But time marches on. Since my first review, there has been an intense new interest in A.A.'s Biblical roots and history. Here are a few of the things that have risen on the scene: (1) Regular heritage seminars each year by Dick B. at the Wilson House where Bill Wilson was born and where he went to Sunday School and then nearby lived with his grandfather Griffith. (2) Several nationwide A.A. history conferences sprang up where the real roots were presented by Dick B., by Dr. Bob's son Smitty, by Ray G.--archivist at Dr. Bob's Home, and by several veteran A.A. women who had not been called on before. (3) Dick was asked to speak at Archives 2000, the event at the International Convention in Minneapolis. His topic--the roots of A.A. (4) Several websites, including four of Dick's own, began posting all kinds of important truths about the real early A.A. and pulling no punches when it came to accurate reporting. Some included NICD, aabibliography, anonymousone.com, mental health matters, silkworth.net, Bible Study Notes, and others. (5) More excellent studies by people like Mel B., Hartigan, Tom White, Susan Cheever, Nan Robertson, Raphael, and the biographers of Silkworth and Lois Wilson. (6) The actual Bill Wilson autobiography that had gathered dust for years was covered in Dick B.'s Turning Point and then published in full by Hazelden. There have been lots more appearances of history. But all these gave rise to the need for a guidebook that would tell people where to start as they picked up their Bibles and wanted their studies to bear the same kind of fruit the early AAs plucked from this "absolutely essential" source. Dick has written other titles on this subject since, but this book stands as a one-stop start on A.A. history and the Bible AAs read and you can read--as I have.

A specific Bible Study Guide from early AA for Today's AAs

I've long awaited this book. 9 months to be exact. It was to have been a manual for studying the Bible within A.A. and other 12 Step programs. It was delayed because of the author's surgery. At the end, it became a review of what early AAs said about Bible study, about what they studied in the Bible, about what the Bible itself is, about the Bible's statements as to our Creator and His name Yahweh and His son Jesus Christ, and then about what it has to offer in terms of releases we all need--from fear, guilt, shame, failure, despair, loneliness, and so on. The appendices are specific, scholarly studies of God's name Yahweh, of the parts of the Bible Dr. Bob considered essential, and about success in A.A. yesterday compared to today. Very useful!

Good Book - Only if it is read

I bought this for my Brother in Law. The last time I spoke with him, he had not even taken it out of the box. What I read of it, I really enjoyed. I
read my Bible very frequently and also have the greatest respect for the "Big Book" and the writings of "Bill W." although I don't have a drinking problem, the 12 Step Program can be applied to any addiction, including worry, which affects me. This book deals with comparisons in Scripture that The A.A. Big Book uses, along with Bible verses and examples to bring the Bible and the Big Book closer together.
I also gave my 84 year old Brother in Law, who gets up about 10 a.m. starts drinking. Gets drunk. Goes back to bed and sleeps until 3 p.m. eats dinner, gets drunk again, goes back to sleep again, and repeats the process, day after day, week after week, month after month, year after year. He has a sitter who feeds and baths him. I am convinced he is doing this as a slow suicide mission, and has no intention of ever quitting. Pray for his salvation.

You need this!!

This comic book was awesome! I took a finance class and the professor made us read it. At first I thought it was it was gonna be another bad assignment but it turned out to be a very inventive way to learn the material. I've read a lot of comic books as a kid so I'm very into hyper visuals learning. I honestly didn't know anything about Tesla or his contribution and the way the book paints Edison as the "bad guy" was really cool. The book also teaches you a lot about perseverance, even in the face of individuals that are only looking to make a profit on your ideas. Tesla's only goal was to improve the world through invention. He wasn't focused on making money and that allowed him to reach heights we haven't reached. Overall I would recommend this anyone looking for an interesting and different way to learn about these type of motifs.

Exceptional and Ingenious - A Must Read For All!

Rave Mehta is ingenious in creating such an exciting and informative way to learn about great inventors! People of this generation are hyper-visual learners and this was the most perfect way to grasp Nikola Tesla's amazing legacy. I hope to see this series continue on to feature many more inventor's and be implemented in classroom's across the nation, since it brings a much more engaged reading than the usual classroom books. The writing and graphics were exceptional and kept me wanting to learn more about Tesla's brilliance. After reading this graphic novel, I kept thinking how I wish I had learned of famous and essential people of history through this forum when I was in school, as I retained the information much more and was thoroughly engaged throughout the reading. Reading from textbooks is much more bland and unexciting, where as a comic book, such as the Tesla one, is much more enjoyable and intriguing. I had never learned about the story of Nikola Tesla and the battles he had to overcome in order to enhance our future :) I highly suggest purchasing it - it won't disappoint!

The publication begins with a detailed description of the programming and site selection approaches which then leads to a description of the attributes that need to be considered for investigation within the site analysis.
The development of a "program" for site planning projects which includes architecture is both essential and uncommon. As a first year Landscape Architecture student, this book was very helpful for clearly laying out the site analysis concepts. You can't beat the graphics as well.

Apparently, there is a new edition coming out, which might have been nice to wait for, but I needed it for a class. overall, a very good book.
