Good undergrad/MBA text.

If you're looking for a graduate textbook, Production & Operations Analysis by Nahmias is your essential text. I'm in a PhD program now, and I found Nahmias' book most helpful. But while I was in an MBA program, I used this POM book by Chase et al. I think the fact that it's on an eigth edition hurts it a little, since the services stuff (as opposed to manufacturing) looks like it's been thrown in as an afterthought, but at least it HAS services stuff, that's a good start - research is kinda hot in the area of services (such as my own research), so you can't expect the textbook to be complete in services topics until the research field matures.
It has an excellent discussion of supply-chain management, and is pretty comprehensive in all POM areas, at least in a qualitative way. The quantitative stuff is rather sporadic, which I think is a good thing - the undergrad/MBA student can learn POM issues without getting bogged down in quantitative details. If it is missing anything, it would be in revenue management (which has lately been incorporated into the supply chain) and risk analysis. Perhaps next edition...

I am a Professor at the University here in Pakistan and have been using this book for teaching production / operation management to the students of MBA here at our university. In my opinion the book is well designed and fulfills all requirements of the course. I would request the author/ publisher if they can provide me the solution manual of this book which will in fact help me in clearing my own concepts of the problems given at the end of each chapter.

Perfect book for teaching Production Management Classes

We use the book in our production courses at the university of Oldenburg in Germany. It's highly appreciated by the students. The CD is a big support for preparing the classes. The only deficit is the fact that not all pictures and tableaus of the book are part of the CD.

Rare History

Most have heard and studied the Greek and the Romans, but before Europe ruled the wrold, there were the Persians. The Medes and Persians survived the Empires of the Assyrians and the Babylonians, before granted their time in history. One of the most structured and orgainized empires of the ancient world, it had an impact on world history, Juduaism, and later Christdom. Alexander the Greek went to Hellenize the world and ended up being influenced by the Persian culture he conquered. Tremendous book of an interesting time of history.

Impressive. Worth the Time to Read.

This book is utterly remarkable. Well written and incredibly comprehensive iteration of the scope, flow and detail of the empire that was Persia, from early pre-Empire times to the Alexandrian conquest (and a bit beyond). It discusses legal, social, military, architectural, religious and business practices, inter-familial rivalries, conquests,etc., in remarkable detail, and it even puts Biblical history of the Jews in exile in context. It captures aspects of the ruling style and methods of the Mede and Persian rulers. It is simply a great and literally huge book, by a Professor whose depth of knowledge and love of his subject is inspiring, even several decades after his death.

Old But Still Kicking

While I'm sure that the information in "The History of the Persian Empire" must have been superceded to a degree in the 50 years since it has been published, and it is likely that Olmstead may have been overly sure of facts, this book is a pleasure to read and a mine of cultural food for thought. I fear the reviewer above who managed to finish the book knowing next to nothing about ancient Persia is saying more about herself than this book. I was chiefly interested in the religious and cultural aspects of the Persian period, rather than the military and political ones, and I have come away from this book considerably more enlightened than I was by Edwin Yamauchi's treatment of Persia. Olmstead is both a vivid and readable writer, witty, detailed and fair-minded. His treatment of the Zoroastrian religion was eye-opening for me, and the way he deals with Palestine and Egypt was also illuminating. I especially got a kick out of his paraphrase renditions of some ancient documents and inscriptions at a purely aesthetic, and somewhat humorous, level. I'm sure there's still more to know, but this is a terrific overview.

The Most Complete Compendium Regarding Fascism

Like every other Oxford Readers book in the market....ABSOLUTELY GREAT!

This book allows you to appropiate the basic concepts regarding what is Fascism, this allows you to move on to more especific books on the subject and therefore make a move to more thorough analysis on the subject.It also presents you with the main theorists that have supported fascism since the early twenties until the end of the century.

Another very interesting thing is that it also introduces you to very non orthodox fascisms, as well as to some that are not really known to the common reader. It analyses Fascisms from places such as Ireland, Estonia, Hungary, BraziL and South Africa among others.

A collection of short, non-philosophical and ad hoc excerpts

In the scholarly debate about the existence of fascist doctrine, Griffin takes the stance that such a doctrine did not exist. This position makes him very inclusive in recognizing almost any ultra-nationalist movement as "fascist". It also dictates the very unphilosophical character of most of his selections: Most of them are ad-hoc speeches or short columnist pieces, focused on or evoked by current events, that express the ideas of their authors in vehement and excited slogans rather than in discursive, abstract argumentation.
One may claim: That is the true fascist talk. But I disagree. Some fascist thinkers, like Gentile and Panunzio, certainly had philosophical argumentations, and saw themselves as spokesmen of a well-ordered political philosophy. A good book ought to give room for this type of works, too.
The book may be very useful for history students - not for anyone who seeks an honest and sine ira presentation of fascist thought.

SUPERB!

I cannot recommend this book enough to students of history and political science. Utterly indespensible and completely fascinating from front to back. It was immediately put to use on a research paper and I will use it again and again in the future.

Lyric Scrapbook of Rap God GRANDMASTER CAZ. Instant Hip-Hop Collector's Item. Here's Why.

I bought the photo book, "WRITTEN! The Lyrics of Grandmaster Caz" earlier this month (October 2014) and any student of rap music or hip-hop enthusiast should add this collector's item to their libraries.

Described as the "Robert Johnson of rap" due to the fact that despite his indelible impact in rap music and landmark status in the world of hip-hop; poor documentation and very few physical records of his to speak of make it so that the general public is ignorant as to what makes Grandmaster Caz a pioneer and legend.

Fellow MC / Rapper Kool Moe Dee eloquently explains what makes Grandmaster Caz GRAND, GREAT and a Founding Father of Hip-Hop in his 2003 book, "There's a God On The Mic: The True 50 Greatest MCs". I won't repeat Kool Moe Dee's insight here, but readers should note that Grandmaster Caz is a complete MC / Rapper and this photo book is an artifact that hints at his power.

Filled with photos of Grandmaster Caz's handwritten lyrics from pages of spiral-bound notebooks, yellow legal-sized notepads, mini notepads/memo books, white legal-sized notepads, composition paper, as well as pages printed from a computer--readers will get to glance at segments of routines, rap song structure and his overall creative process -- not to mention Grandmaster Caz's extraordinary penmanship.

Hosted by Grandmaster Caz, I can attest to the fact that hip-hop emanates from the pores of Grandmaster Caz like sweat on a summer day. He is a living embodiment of the art form (as anyone who saw his star-showing turn in Ice-T's 2012 documentary "Something From Nothing: The Art Of Rap" can attest to) and those who buy this lyric book can forever own a true hip-hop keepsake.

My only complaint is that in some of the photos, the handwritten lyrics are slightly faint--making the lyrics a little hard to read. Otherwise, I'd advise you to buy this lyric book while supplies last as they are VERY hard to find.

A wonderful resource but a misleading cover

If this book had been marketed differently, it would have received 5 stars from me. I struggled with the rating but I cannot understand why the publisher would put a picture of Hulk Hogan on the cover when his name appears only 3-4 times in the book? It seems deceptive as a picture of Bruno Sammartino, Nature Boy Buddy Rogers or Vince McMahon, Sr. would have been much more appropriate.

With that out of the way, I would like to say that this book is an excellent resource for pro wrestling historians. The book really picks up momentum after the halfway mark and tells the story of the WWWF in the pre titan sports days. This book must have been a labor of love for the author and I commend and thank him for it.

I do have one additional quibble- the information about Jess McMahon was fascinating but it seems to get lost in the author setting the context for that time period. It almost seemed like Jess had to be pushed as if he was more prominent than he was to make the premise of the book work.

I'd love to see more historical pieces by this author. I did read his NWA book, which was great as well.

Before Steve Austin, before Hulk Hogan, before Vince McMahon, there was... another Vince McMahon

Impeccably researched, this book details the history of pro wrestling in the 1900's before the Hulkamania and Attitude eras of the 80's and 90's. Focused on the McMahon family (Vince McMahon's father and grandfather), the author digs into the growth of the Northeast territory and all the political, competitive, and internal struggles along the way, including the rise and fall of wrestlers like Buddy Rogers and Bruno Sammartino. It's interesting to learn how these wrestlers came to be champions; many times the titles were determined as much by loyalty and backstage machinations as by their in-ring abilities and crowd appeal.

This was the era when wrestling was "real," meaning that it was not openly acknowledged to be entertainment, and the promoters had little reason to keep notes or proper records. The last major national promotion, the WWE, does little to acknowledge its heritage prior to the 1980's, either. The author is to be commended for pulling together this history in spite of these limitations, relying on newspaper clippings and interviews to compile the facts. At times the prose is a bit dry, but this work will appeal to wrestling enthusiasts who want to learn more about the sport's history and how the WWE got to be the force that it is today.

Great book by Tim Hornbaker. Tim always does amazing research on his books and this one is no different. An amazing walk through the twentieth century and the McMahon Family's rise to power in professional wrestling with the WWWF,WWF & WWE. Truly an informative read and one that people who want to understand how wrestling works (and how it came to be), should read. Great job Tim and I highly recommended this book!

intriguing family drama

Twenty-six year old architect Annie Ferguson looks forward to starting on her new job and living in Manhattan with her boyfriend Seth. As she is euphoric and confident about the changes in her life, she thought nothing about her vow to be the guardian of her two nieces and nephew she made to her sister Jane. That is until Jane and her husband Bill die in a plane crash, so Annie raises the three preadolescent children (Liz, Ted and Katie). Seth cannot deal with the change so ends their relationship.

Sixteen years later, Annie raised her wards with love while running a successful architectural firm. Ted attends law school, Katie is studying design at college; and Liz is a globetrotting Vogue editor. When Annie sprains her ankle, she goes to the emergency room where she meets TV news anchor Tom. Katie drops out of Pratt to work at a tattoo parlor while traveling to Teheran with her Iranian-American boyfriend Paul. Liz's French lover Jean-Louis seems back with his former lover Francoise, the mother of his child. Ted has a tryst with his older law professor, but when he tries to end their sexual relationship, Pattie stabs him in the hand.

This intriguing family drama is an enjoyable contemporary as the aunt of the three orphaned children proves she is A Good Woman when she takes over raising them with the deaths of their parents. The tale contains way too much angst keeping the four subplots from gelling into a cohesive story line, but instead competes for the lead. Still fans will enjoy Danielle Steel's latest as the strong cast makes the case that family is the ultimate proof of chaos theory.

Fast Read

I read this book in about 6 hours. That's because by page 6, I only had to read the first two sentences of each paragraph. The rest of the paragraph was a repeat of a previous paragraph, or in a few cases an almost exact repeat of the paragraph above it. This has been an ongoing problem with Steel's books for several years now.
The story line was good and interesting, that's why I gave it 2 stars, but I'm really glad I quit buying Danielle Steel's books and now get them free from the library. I would definitely feel cheated out of my money otherwise.

About the Author

Ian Tattersall is a curator in the division of anthropology at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City. Trained in archaeology and anthropology at Cambridge, and in vertebrate paleontology at Yale, Tattersall has concentrated his research since the 1960s in three main areas: the analysis of the human fossil record and its integration with evolutionary theory, the origin of human cognition, and the study of the ecology and systematics of the lemurs of Madagascar. He is also a prominent interpreter of human paleontology to the public.

depth and interest

I am retired so bit of a fossil myself. I am on my third listen to this book I have enjoyed it so much. With understandable depth (not a pun) and adequate challenge to my knowledge level I cannot leave it alone. Tied with other readings and my personal monologue of 50,000 words discussing the evolution/creation debate it is a valuable resource. I cannot repeat enough the great information and kindle professional reading of this work. I also read 'Your Inner Fish' by Neil Shubin - also an excellent book on fossil records. If this is your interest level you will get a lot out of this work.

A Field Guide to the History of Life that is Lucid but Rushed

"Paleontology A Brief History of Life" by Ian Tattersall
It is difficult for human beings to grasp the very long time scales and complicated processes that are responsible for the evolution of life on Earth. “Paleontology,” by Ian Tattersall, is intended to be a brief introduction, something like a field guide, or a tourist manual to the history of life. It succeeds as a lucid summary by an expert.
This book was written under a confining agenda, since it was commissioned by the Templeton Science and Religion Series. It fits within a framework of “short and compelling books that are concise and convenient…for a general audience with interests in the sciences or humanities…”
The good news is that this book fulfills its agenda, and can be counted on by the general reader for its brevity and authority. The bad news is that Ian Tattersall has written much better books, and that much better books already exist to help the general reader to understand the history of life. This book is too rushed and compressed to be truly evocative of the wonder of its subject matter.
This book begins with the origin of planet Earth and it ends with the cognitive revolution of the human brain. It covers about four billion years in two hundred pages. Examples of its fine passages include this one: “ Sit back and watch the passing parade of animal life changing before your eyes as the epochs unroll.”
An example of its frantic, over-stuffed prose would be: “Taeniodonts, tillodonts, pantodonts, and the archaic ungulate genera all virtually disappeared.” Thus we are too quickly swept along through epochs and eras, animals, bone structures, fish, frogs and people.
“Paleontology” is at its best when Tattersall is discussing human evolution, on which he is a world-class expert. For example, he evokes and compresses the phenomenon of hominid evolution into the dominance of vision over smell, improved manipulative capacities in the hand, enlargement of the higher centers of the brain, and complex social relations. However, this book is only a pale copy of Tattersall’s book, “Masters of the Planet.” To hold in the mind’s eye in wonder the sweep of evolutionary changes in animal forms that carry us from a naked Earth to human civilization, I personally would prefer books such as, DK’s “Prehistoric Life,” (a book predominantly of pictures), or the classic with Stephen Jay Gould as general editor, “The Book of Life.”
While “Paleontology” has excellence, its agenda of compression reduces the wonder of life to a foreshortened history analogous to those brief texts that list all the kings who ruled but give you little feeling for the story lived by all the citizens.
