About the Author
Thomas Del Prete is the inaugural Director of the Adam Institute for Urban Teaching and School Practice at Clark University in Worcester, MA. He is past Director of the Hiatt Center for Urban Education at Clark and a former teacher of history and English at the middle and high school levels. He has worked for twenty-five years in teacher education, school-university partnership, and school reform. His previous books include Improving the Odds: Developing Powerful Teaching Practice and a Culture of Learning in Urban High Schools and Thomas Merton and the Education of the Whole Person. He has participated in hundreds of Teacher Rounds, most with his colleagues in the urban schools of “Main South” in Worcester, MA, in an effort to learn in and from practice.

Packed full of useful information and strategies. Particularly good for infants and toddlers but helpful for older children too. It has not eliminated the need for glasses but has kept prescription from going up (which it had every year until we started doing eye exercises).

A very supportive approach for abuse survivors

I first read this book six years ago. I found it confronting and very supportive. I believe this book has the power to encourage a lot of personal growth for people who have experienced abuse of all types in their childhood. What I found particularly effective about this book was that it covered a range of abuse patterns, which I believe many abusive parents use. Other books I have read tend to focus on one form of abuse exclusively, whereas if you have experienced physical abuse or sexual abuse, you may be likely to have experienced verbal and psychological abuse also. I read through this book with a pencil in hand, I found so many parts that rang true for me. The checklists in the book are a way of gauging honestly where you in dealing with your life and your relationship with your parents. Now six years later, I have just reread this book and I see how much I have grown in this time. No longer is this book so confronting for me, I was more able to appreciate the suggestions and exercises made. I have been thrilled to see that this book had planted seeds of thought and realisation within me, and that over the years I have been able to instigate real change within me and in my relationship with my parents. These relationships are far more real and true to me. I now speak with more personal authority and honesty to my family. One criticism I have is the way that confrontation is seen as a necessary goal. It is certainly helpful if it feels right and necessary to the reader, but i feel that the most effective form of healing is to reach a point in ourselves where we know our own truth and set out our own rules, whether we need to confront our family with our truths or not. I think in many ways survivors of abuse have attempted to reach out to their families and communicate their feelings, but I take on board that this may be more effective with self-knowledge and improved communication skills.Personally I have tried confrontation and found it ineffective, but by believing in myself, being honest and creating a life that is right for me, I have found freedom. This may not be the case for many readers, so I do not mean to deter you. I offer my silent support. All in all, this is an extremely useful, supportive and valuable book which I would recommend to anyone who wants to improve their relationship with themselves, their families and create a life which has more potential for truth and happiness

Painful to read, but so healing

I just finished this book last night.

I also just sent my letter of confrontation -- last night.

I don't know how my story will end, but it probably will end with permanent estrangement. We've already been largely estranged for more than a year, when I broke out of my assigned "role" after my mother's death. I didn't realize that's what I'd done until I'd read the book.

I think what was so painful about this book was seeing myself and my family on virtually every single page. I almost skipped the section for alcoholics, since no one in my family drank, but I didn't, and I'm so thankful I didn't. You see, my mother was mentally ill and largely untreated. The secrecy and shame that surrounded her illness colored every aspect of our lives. It was as if she was the alcoholic. I still grieve for all we lost due to a stupid stigma that she didn't deserve, that none of us deserved.

If you have a dysfunctional family and suffered from wounds or trauma in your childhood, this book will start you on the painful path of healing. You will cry. You will open up pus-filled, infected wounds that you thought were long since scarred over. You will discover pain that you thought had long since quieted to a dull ache reawakened to a burning fire.

But you will also find a small flicker of burning hope. Reach for it. There's healing there.

If you are ready....a good resource!

If you are ready to deal with and get rid of all the toxic things from your childhood that are holding you back......this is the book for you!!
I found it very helpful and there is so much information that it is an invaluable tool to get your life back and move on!
Not easy to read when it applies to your life but it can open your eyes to why you react and act the way that you do as an adult.
I thought it was wonderful!! So much insight!
It is easy enough for anyone to read and understand...I liked that too!
